Y. Oct. 3.-(Spe- cial.) l.)-Syracuse’s 330 victory over Hobart--before the largest crowd to ever witnes- a first game at Syra- all-arourd backfield play of Chester Bowms,l. the Jersey sprinter, Lynn Waldorf. the star tackle of the Orange team, and the quarterback fplay of Roy Simmons. the Chicago lad. Bowman showed that he can buck a line, kick, throw Gorward passes with deadly accuracy and can run through broken field as has seldom been done in Arehbold sta- dium. No less than a half dozen times, on Saturday, he got away for long runs of 30 to 50 yards, two of them resulting in touchdowns. The Hobart game gave Coach Meehan and his assistants a chance to judge their teams strength, which must be mustered to midseason form before the Alabama and Pittsburg games which are only two weeks Pop Warmers Panthers in the Yam kee stadium in New York and 1t will be one of the big football at fractions of the season for the Metropolitan fans. There is plenty to be done before these two big games for the two guard berths are still very much in question. Rugg and Biggs, the latter Long Island lad, who has only attempted to play football since he entered Syracuse last fall started the Hobart game. Vanagen, Delmonico and Haysinger were also tried, and 1t is probable that the best of these five will be the ultimate choice to pair with Jim Noble. the Cleveland boy, for the two guard jobs. The outstanding feature of Syra- cuses team play was the splendid cutting down of men by the Orange players when giving interference for the runners. Meehan’s proteges played beautiful football in this re- spect. eff” Zimmerman, the kicking ace of the backfield, was not used Sat urday. His injured arm is practice ally healed, but the club physician, Dr. P. A. Ransom, advised keeping him on the bench few days longer. Next Saturdays game with William and Mary, who succeeded in scoring against the Navy last week, is not being treated lightly by the Orange team. The work this week will be very strenuous and, by Friday, the final makeup of Meehan’s team, bar ring later accident will be much more certain.
