NAVY STOPS PENN STATES RUN OF VICTORIES, “A TO O Nittany Lions Given Their First Beating in Three Years Washington, NoVember S-(Spe- cial )-Some s0.000 souls and dozen or so Kniekerbocked cops, who looked like they might be starting out for an afternoon of “Gawf,” saw the Annapolis middies knock Hugo Bezdek Nittany Lions into a mess of minced ham Friday afternoon, the final score being Navy. Penn, 0. Rather than elect to play the sub marine act the Navy brought her hydroplanes into play. and bombed the, enemy from above for the first touchdown. It was a forward pass, Mckee to Taylor. Just bit over the hands of Penn Staters and across the goal, and Conroy kicked goal. The Naval student body in the southern ends of the stands had fit. Fools rushed in where angels would have feard to tread on the play that netted the Navy her first score. It was fourth down on that final try for forward pass, and it worked. Tumble Let In One The other touchdown came as result of a tumble in the shadow or Pennsylvania’s goal. The lions had bralnstorm at this juncture, and ther thinking appar- atus wasn’t hitting on all six. With their own goal line right on their heels, they attempted three un- successful forward passes. The fourth down was an attempt at an end run, and the fatal tumble spilled the beans, and Conroy again kicked goal. The Middies looked like an eastern team; the Penn Staters like Dixie gregation-Dixie bone and Dixie coached It’s line held against enemy onslaughts, and the navy could do little over the line, or around end, but aerially. they bewildered the Penn Staters, when becoming bewildered proved fatal. My own original opinion is that three or four southern teams l know could have beaten either the Middies or Lions the way they played Frl- day. And I have seen better bunting on high school teams than Penn State put on display, and the Crimson Tide in it’s most superb form couldn’t have outfumbled the Lions and Middies Friday. Pre-Game Thrills While little of the sensational was seen in a football way, the pre-game thrills were plentiful. After Penn States wonderful band had paraded the field, headed by student in lion skin garb, the uniformed Mid dies, with their long coats and white gloves, started marching upon the field A line, three deep. kept cross ing the gridiron and piling into the seats. It was the greatest piece of drill work I have ever seen. and they kept coming, and coming in end- less formations. All through the bat tie the Middies kept up an uproar Of songs and cheers. Between halves, the man in the lion skin got on all-fours, and staged battle with the poor bewildered Navy goat. The goat didn’t know what to make of being attacked by a lion, but he showed fight as the movie cam eras clicked. The entire Alabama team wit messed the game. being guests of the Navy. Bob Folwell. head coach for the Middies, contributed the ducats. The Washington American league ball park is not as good a place to see a game as Redwood field. Grandstand seats are mile away from the scene. Penn state suffered its first football defeat today in three years, going down before the powerful Navy eleven. In marking up a Il to O score, the midshipmen staged a comback after their beating by the University of P~eppsylvania. last week and evened up the count following their defeat by the Military Lions Just a year ago. . 49,. $3.50. ,.., In the hot and sultry weather. both teams got away to a ragged start, but after that, each side displayed d dash furnished plenty of excitement for the largest and most distinguished crowd that ever attended a football game in Washington. Governor Sproul and his official staff came down from Harris burg to lend encouragement to the Lions while official Washington was largely represented. Members of the cabinet. as well as foreign diplomats, navy and army officers and others in official life were on hand. After an exchange of punts had given the Navy the ball on States DO yard line the midshipmen opened up their overhead attack and in three passes Taylor went over for “A touch down. The final pass was from Nc kee. for IS yards, the Navy end pick ing the ball out of the air at the goal line. Conroy made it seven points with a placement goal. The score came six minutes after the second period opened. Navy scored its second touchdown in the third period when Cullen recovcred n tumble by Kraft and ran 10 yards across the goal. Captain Conrod added the extra point with a perfeet drop kick. Penn State twice carried a threat to the Navy in the first period, once with line charges and passes and again by recovering Il tumble, but it lacked the punch to carry the ball over and on zach occasion Palms try at a field goal failed. After that, the forward and double passing game of the Lions carried but little of n puzzle for the midshipmen until the closing minutes of play. Then it was too late,
