HUSKIES TASTE HOLLOW TRI- UMPH In 2 TO 0 GANIE-STATE PROUD OF VANDALS its home field, the University of Idaho Vandals Of 1922, coached by r. L. Mathews and captained by J. A. &’Babe” Brown, put up an exhibition of fight and undaunted courage that brought tears of pride to every Idaho man in the Washington stadium Saturday afternoon. The record books will show and the conference standing will show that the University of Washington won from the University of Idaho 2 to 0 on October Ia, but Washington knows that Idaho won great moral victory in the most thrilling and hardest fought football game ever seen at Seattle in the new stadium. Idaho Courage When a team holds seven times beneathe the very shadow of its own goal posts, within the less than ten yard line, that team is playing good defensive football. That team is showing the courage. That team was playing Saturday under the colors of silver and gold for the University of Idaho for that is what Coach Mathews’ men did for their university and coach. Idaho has nothing to be ashamed of but everything to be proud of. Tears of pride were in Mathews eyes when the game ended for he knew the men had done all that had been asked Of them by him before the game, “to fight from the beginning to the end” Afer the game with all Seattle mar yelling over the showing made by the Idaho team an enthusiastic former Idaho student congratulated Coach Mathews on the splendid showing Of his team. “Don’t shake my hand, said the coach. “but the hands Of those play ers.” No Substituti0ns Made Not substitution was made by Ida no during the entire game. The Ida no men were fit. They were in condition. Seldom if ever does a foot ball lineup remain unchanged during such a grueling, terrifica11y hard game as was the Idaho-W Washington classic. It was a tribute to the conditon, staying power and the ‘guts” OF eleven Idaho Vandals. They had the punch. The University of Washington made four substitutfons and in the second half practically a new backfield was put in by Coach Bagshaw. But the fresh backfield plungers, the other players, or the Washington team could not put the ball across. They could not cross the Idaho goal line. At one time Washington had the on Idaho’s one-yard line with four downs to steam roller the ball over for touchdown But they didn’t The Washington huskies couldn’t. Some how the Idaho Line stiffened. The offensive drives stopped as though d. rected at wall of concrete When the ball passed into Idaho’s hands on downs the play was on Idaho’s eight yard line and not the one yard line. That was the way the Idaho men put back the Huskies when their own line was seriously threatened Repeat these few inadequate lines for seven times and you have glimpse of the idaho defense. idaho Fights” Demonstrated With three minutes to play Vohs was hurt and time was taken out. The next Washington play was direct ed naturally enough at Vohs and his side of the line. The result, was that Vohs was through to stop the Wash ington runner for a five-yard loss. This illustration is not meant person ally. as it only shows the fighting spirit Of the whole Idaho team. ida no fights” was demonstrated on the Washington field. To say that one Idaho man starred is wrong because there were eleven stars. 1t would be equally wrong to say that one man can win or lose a football game In the football of tocih1n To win or lose a game. The breaks in the game, those al most unavoidable things that make football, won rule-book victory, hollow victory for Washington. Not again, no never again, will Washing ton consider football game with Ida no practice game. Not again will the odds of three to one or 20 point bets be waved in the air. Captain Brown played brilliant foot ball HIS punting was excellent, for goodly distances, and proved to be a big defensive factor. Brown smash ed through the line for gain after gain and he backed up the line on defense with his usual hard hitting tactics. Eleven Idaho Stars Kleffner was probably Idaho’s largest ground gamer and he worked nice 1y with Stivers on forward passes “Syb” slipped, circled, lodged, ducked and squirmed through for good gains And let it be remarked here with the assurance of accuracy that Idaho Of fensively was indeed dangerous for After Washington scored their safety they punted time after time on a first down. At ono time Ida hO was on WASH o. tons Is yard line and as the game closed forward pass had put Ida no we’ll on the way for touchdown. 1t is impossible to forecast what might have happened in five minutes more Of play except that Washington was scared.
