VANDERBILT LIN Fl HOLDS MICHIGAN. TO SCORELESS TIE. Northern Eleven Makes Only Six First Downs Against Vandy Nashville, October 1.-The Mich isan Wolverine crept back to it’s lair tonight torn and toppled from it’s exalted heights in the gridiron world as a result of it’s to tie at the hands of Vanderbilt A Vanderbilt line defense that stood as impreenable as steel told the tale of Michigans failure to batter the Commoder into helplessness as had been broadly predicted before the game The touted Wolverine with its kit of battering rams in the fiuges Of Kipke, Cappon and others, scored harmless six first downs against the Commodores-and two of them were results Of penalties. Vanderbilt made one first down from scrimmage but tEe inability of its offense was lowered over by the impenetrabie and steadfast manner in which it’s defense flung back the thrust of the Mich igan backs. Ixipke Helpless Kipko was helpless in his battering assaults against tho Vanderbilt line and time after time was nailed even behind his own line of scrimmage. Cappon alone was able to make dent on the offense He requently broke through the defending for wards and added yardage, but they came yards and yards from the Gold and Black goal line. The games high point and Mich i9an’s only opportunity of crossing Nanderbilt’s goal, came only a few minutes after the game was called. partially blocked punt gave the Wolverines the ball on Vanderbilt’s 25yard line. Two end runs, two line bucks and a forward pass car ried Michigan to within one yard of Vanderbilt’s goal line. In three at tempts, all of them vicious jabs at the heart of the Commoder line, the Wolverine was stopped still. When the ball was taken after the last down, 1t was one foot from the Van derb1t goal line. That was the blow that turned Michigan back for al- most every succeeding play and the turn that gave their opponents con fidenee enough to stay the Wolverine attack the rest of the game Not one time thereafter did Michigan reach within 15 yards of the Van derbilt goal line. Vandy’s One Opportunity Vanderbilt had only one possible opportunity to score and it came when “Tot” Mccullough, left end. caught a 20yard pass on Michlgan’s 20-yard line in the first period. The advance halted there. Attempts over the line wer reprlsed and the op- portunity went -glimmering when uteritz intercepted a pass and Mich igan carried 1t away from their goal line by bunting. From then on play centered well toward the center of the field or not deep enough in Vanderbilt territory to menace their goal line. The fact that Vanderbilt uncover cd no offensive of a startling char acter afforded Micigan no opportu- nifty to set up an outstanding de- fensive star and the fact that kipke and Cappon, were both watched too closely, dimmed their feared bril- iianee. Michigan as unit played good football, but did not step out of the Commodore class today. Lynn Bomar, brilliant Vanderbilt tackle. was the outstanding defensive figure of the game, throwing the giant Micigan backs for repeated losses while backing up the Van Neely and Bradford also played bril- liant defensive football.
