Princeton Eleven Defeats Virginia BY Score of 5 to @ PRINCETON, N. j., Oct. 7.-Playing IN dowhpour of rain Princeton scored to victory over the University of Virginia football eleven here this afternoon. The game was badly marred by numerous fumbles and misplays due TO the slippery ground and wet ball, and the only scoring came as a result of drop kick and a safety. Neither side was able to seriously threaten its opponent’s goal line. In spite of the inclement weather. between four and five thousand loval Tiger rooters gathered in Palmer Sta dunn and bravely faced the rain, which started about o’clock and did not let up until the close of the contest. After Baker had made the initial kickoff Foster fumbled, and it was evident that there Would be much loose playing. At regular intervals there after Virginia lost much ground through fumbles, which Arnold and Oppleman were forced to overcome with their splendid line plunging. Prince ton with fewer fumbles had the declded advantage on the exchange of punts. Vangerbig sending one forty yard boot out of bounds only six inches from the Virginia line. Arnod’s return punts averaged about twenty-five yards. Princeton gained such advantages on the punts that the ball was in Virginia territory for almost the entire game, although the Southerners did make three earned first downs Whenever the Tigers were near the opponents they seemed powerless to advance, and five times Smith was called upon to drop kick, with the ball inside the 25yard line, but only once did he succeed Princeton tried several forward passes, but only one succeeded The first Tiger score came in the second quarter on Smiths initial at tempt at drop kicking. The safety was made in the last quarter, when Arnold attempting to punt, standing on the goal line, fumbled, recovered and was thrown behind the line The features of the game were a sweeping forty yard dash around end by Dick Newby and the punting of Vangerbig and Cleaves.

Tiger. May Meet Trouble. Princeton. which had all kinds Of trouble last Saturday against Virginia and won by only 5 to 0. being unable to score a touchdown. looks to be headed for trouble on Saturday The Tigers will face Colgate, which won at Nassau in 1920 but fell before the Orange and Black last October. 10 to o. We hear that the Maroon is considerably stronger than it was last year and that II is n aking giant strides under Dick Herlow. the new coach. who was assistant to Hugo Bezdek at Penn State for several years. Princeton men assume most pessimistlc attitude when they talk football these days. They have not been so sad over the football situation at Princeton In dozen years. Many already are ready to put this year down as a total loss and look toward 1923. However, n lot of hard working. willing young men sometimes prove superior to a bunch of war worn veterans who may suffer from overconfidence. The Tigers find the public expecting little from them, and because OF that they may come through with flying colors 1t has been done before.
