coaches have plenty of work befo battles to come. Three elevens in particular were rather disappointing, namely Yale, Har ward and Lehigh. Ali three were saved from the stigma OF defeat, but none looked imposing. The Ellis, after ar overwhelming victory over Bates { week ago, defeated Carnegie Tech BY the none too comforting margin OF 1s to 0. The lighter Carnegie team, in fact, gained much more ground than Tad Jones’s outfit. Fumbles, however proved disastrous to Carnegie. The New Haven team has the indiyidual ability and time undoubtedly play. The one bright light in the vic tory was Charley O’Hearn, who kicked two field goals, one from the 52-yard line. Harvard was surprised by Middle bury, but the Crimson won by margin of three touchdowns. The Vermont team, swept off its feet in the first few minutes, settled down TO q driving at tack which carried the ball frequently into Harvard territory. One Middle bury advance Of more than sixty yards was stopped in the shadow Of the Grim son goal posts. Lehigh Stunned by Gettysburg Lehigh, always we’ll up with the best in the East, was stunned by Gettysburg, and instead of victory the Beth lehem students were forced to be satisied with a scoreless tie. Other leading machines Of the East scored heavily against their opponents, Princeton, Cornell, Lafayette, Syracuse, W. and j. and Pitt winning by wide margins. The Tiger Is especially worthy Of mention for the 80 to @ victory over Johns Hopkins. This triumph was achieved with two quartets alternating in the backfeld. Coach Bill Roper has lost his star backs of 1921, but there is both quantity and quality in the new backfeld material. Syracuse scored its second victory Of the early season, defeating Muhlenberg by 47 to 0. The outstanding feature Of the Orange teams victory was the sensational open field running of the backs. Chester Bowman, in for brief period, made spectacular runs of fifty Ave and sixty-two yards. Kellogg also broke away for a big gain. Coach Chick Meehan’s backs apparently know how to pick openings in the enemy’s defense. Cornell, after an uncertain start in the first period, rolled up a tally Of 55 to against ST. Bonaventurc. Pfann, scoring four touchdowns for the “Big Red” team, carried off the individual scoring honors for the day. Lafayette, undefeated last year, started we’ll, and the work of the vet erans Gazel1a and Drummer was much Richmond. w. and j. scored it’s sec ond victory Of the year in defeating Westminster, 35 to 0. Glenn Warmers Pittsburgh outfit was on the long end of $40 score against the University Of Cincinnati. Manhattan’s Elevens Start Well Manhattan’s elevens did very we’ll in their opening encounters. All three won, and Columbia displayed pow erful machine, overwhelming Ursinus by score Of 48 to Z. The Blue and White has much stronger team than in 1921, and the backfeld combination is particularly brilliant. Fordham defeated Canisius by two touchdowns, but morally it was much greater victory. Frank Gargan has but four veterans on his team, the others being last years freshmen. Considering all things it was an auspicious start for the Maroon. The VIC tory has given Fordham the confidence which will prove helpful in the harder battles yet to come. N. Y. U. had an easy workout against the New York Aggies in preparation for the tussle with Syracuse next Saturday. Tom Thorp has fine fighting team, light and green in spots, but willing to learn and full Of pep. One interesting feature Of Saturday s contests was something novel in the way Of starting plays at Rutgers. San ford’s new system Is to have no signals called by the quarter back or any one else. Instead, before each play, the Rutgers men gather back of the scrimmage line for conference, then they jump to their positions, and at the shout of BALL” the play begins. According to reports, this system tended \ to slow up the play. 1t will be inter ! csting to see how it works in future games. Saturday Rutgers defeated Penn Military College by 13 to 0. In the other games where leading teams figured Penn State was extended to defeat William and Mary College by % to 7, Penn could score but two touchdowns against Franklin and Mar shall, Colgate swamped Clarkson Tech to the tune of so to and Dartmouth took the measure of Norwich, 20 to O.. The Army played two games Saturday and won both, defeating Springfield S5 to and Lebanon Valley IL to O.. The Navy is taking advantage of an extra week of practice before opening it’s campaign.
