NAVY OUTPLAYS HEAVY BETHANY ELEVEN, q TO 0 Middies Make All Their Scores in the First Half. ANNAPOLIS. Nd, Oct. as.-Playing with snap and dash in the early stages OF the game. the Annapolis Mfdshipmen defeated the heavy Beth any College eleven here today by a score Of 81 to o. AL of the scoring was done In the frst half, the MiddIes twice invading the opposing goal line In the opening PERIOD and once in the second. and Carney. the big right guard. kicked all three goals. Practically all Of the Navy regulars played throughout the first half In the second half frequent substitutons were made. and while II was not thought these would materially effect the strength OF the team. yet the attacking machine could not get going smoothly, while on the other hand the lads from the Mountain State exhibited a remarkable brace In defensive work and frequently forced Uncle Sans naval wards to engage in punting. The visitors were outplayed both on attack and defense except in brief stages during the latter half when it was stand-off. In the first half, the Middies had decidedly the advantage. The line was intact all the while. preventing the visitors from making a first down. The Middies’ backs ripped through Bethany’s line and skirted the ends almost at will. His puntihg was far superior to that Of either Barchet, King. Noyes or Cullen. who did the booting for Navy at different stages. His punts carried well, were eleverly placed. and often bounded Tar into Navy territory, enabling the ends TO trail them down the field. although on several occasions the Navy backs ran them back in fine style. In Kelly and Randolph. Bethany had a good pair of working backs. and they bore the brunt OF rushing. The visitors had a line shift that culminated in a wide end run, but the play was generally smeared. or resuited in only a sight gain The Middies scored their three touchdowns as the result OF rip snorting line plunges, punctuated by a series of off-tackle plays. and an occasional end run, in which Koehler. Barchet and Conroy all did great work. The first touch down came after a steady march OF IS yards. Bethany held strong when the advance was within 6 yards Of the goal line. but on the last down Koehler circled left end for the score and Carney kicked a goal. KoehIer also made the sec ond touchdown after a strikingly similar play. In the third period, just before Navy made its third invasion for a touchdown, Bethany braced in the shadow of the posts, but Cullen finally drove through the line for two yards and a score. Other out standing features of the game were a spectacular run of so yards by Noyes, Navy, in the fourth period. and shorter dashes by the feet footed Durgan, a substitute back.
