COLUMBIA DEFEATS WESLEYAN EASILY Heavy Blue and White War riors Score ID to 8 Victory. IMPROVEMENT MARKED Local Collegians Play Impress sively, Moszczenski and Koppisch Starring. cold, chill1ng rain, Columbia Qeclsavely defeated Wesleyan on South Field yes terday afternoon by the score Of IA to 8. It was the first victory for Buck CNelll’s machine this year. and had the Blue and White eleven flashed the kind of football they showed yesterday Amherst never would have Been able to nose out a victory last Saturday. Columbia got the Jump on the visitors yesterday. practically played them off their feet in the first few minutes and at all times held the upper hand. Columbia’s heavy line found the wet going to Its liking. while the speed that was supposed TO make Wesleyan feared never had an opportunity to show itself. The conquerors Of Stevens never seemed able to get going, save for one concerted attack In the third period that netted forty yards but fell short, and far short, Of touchdown. Not, a first down was marked against the line coached by Joe Brooks during the first half, while that same line was plohghing steadily through Wesleyan’s weaker forward wall for no less than sgven first downs In the opening period. In Carl Moszczenslxi and Walter Kop- Disch the visitors discovered pair OF backs that could not be stopped and the way these boys rornped and ragged over the field had the Connecticut col legians continually on the defensive. Each carried tine ball over for touch down once. The tackling Of Koppisch was particularly effective. Time and again tho ‘‘ormer Buffalo schoolboy star downed a Wesleyan back for a loss and several times he beat the ends down the field 70 stop man who received Anderson’s lcng punt. Anderson Dirccts Team. Anderson, Who started his first game as varsity quarterback. made a good Impression and was certainly an I’m provement over Eucls Freeman. who played against Amherst. His punting was the first exhibition Of real kicking seen on South Field this year and was a mighty weapon Of offence and defence. He easily outkicked q trio OF Wesleyan backs, Scriggens. Abbott and Parsons. 1t was Scriggens. the losing ful, back, who provided one Of the sensations of tho day. The heaviest and most versa IAe player on his squad, he was lost to the team In the Stevens game because OF ineiigibility. but managed to pass OF a makeup examination In time to be pronounced eligible TO meet the Blue and White. Toward the opening OF the second period he sent a perfect drop kick whizzfng over the cross bar from the 80 :ard line. no mean feat when II Is cons.dered that the ball was wet and clip pery and no sure footing could be had on the miry turf. He eseayed a still more heroic attempt later in the game. trying to drop the leather over from the As yard mark, but the kick was blocked. Captain Scovu won the toss with Cap tain Butler and chose to defend the west goal. with Wesleyan kicking off. Once The Blue and White got possession OF the ball. a fighting spirit that one would have found hard to find a week ago seemed to send the eleven on its way and play after play was reeled off for continuous gains Four first downs were credited to the Blue and White In rapid succession until the ball was placed on Wesleyan’s yard line. But hcre men from Middletown took their stand and fought the Blue and White to standstill. At that Columbia might have scored IL one Of her backs had not fumbled the ball on the fourth down. 80 Yards for Touchdown. Abbott punted out of danger for the time being, but again O’Neilrs machine began its ruthless march, two first downs resulting In gain of thirty yards. and again wesleyan’s limo was near. But again the visitors held and again Abbott punted out. This time Moszczenski took matters into his own hand. dashed OFF tackle and Guiding several who monaced his path to a touch down. ran thirty-five yards for q score. Anderson kicked a pretty goal and CO. lunbia led, never to DO headed. 1t was not until the second period that Wesleyan was able to garner It’s initial first down. and that only as the result OF penalty. But gradually she worked the ball toward Columbia’s line until Scriggens, standing on the thirty two yard mark. booted the ball over the Blue and White crossbar for Wesloyans only score. scrisgcns kicked off for the Red and Black following his field goal, but the boot was poor and Columbia took the bal! on her forty yard line. But the advance could not be continued and after an exchange OF kicks, W. b. johnson went In for Mosxczensld. who had been slightly hurt with the brilliant fullback out Of the contest the Blue and White attack seemed to lose much OF Its sting and effectiveness. and Wesleyan Immediately hao Arat
