PENN SWAMPS BLUE AND GOLD ELEVEN Delaware Outclassed on Frank lin Field in Miserable Exhi- bition of Football. Philadelphia, Pa. Sept. 2es-The University of Pennsylvania football Warriors walked roughshod over the University of Delaware eleven here on Saturday afternoon before nearly $4,000 spectators and when the exelement was over, the Heisman rroteges had amassed 50 points, equalling the mark made by the Penn team year before last Delaware held Penn TO 30 points in their game last season. The contest was one of the most miserable exhibitions ever staged on Franklin Field and long before the close of the game. hundreds of spec tators left TIE grounds disgusted. The Blue and Gold warriors had plenty of fight and displayed IL par ticularly in the early stages of the game. Their exhibition on Saturday shows that the team can stand some more intensive training. The short time in which Coach Derby had to whip the team together, apparently. was not sufficient to in any way perfeet well-playing combination. The Delaware players tackled or at tempted to tackle high. This cost them several touchdowns, for had low tackles been made. the runners would have been dropped. whereas with the high tackle, the runner was able to ward off the tackler. Instead of trying a passing game whenever it got the ball early in the contest, Delaware elected to punt and the kicks were terrible. A line plunge in the latter part OF the game netted Delaware eight yards. That was the only line plunge of the game. Coach Derby’s team tried one forward pass and it failed. The team played no Of fensive game. Injuries hurt Delaware Saturday. Captain Holton started in the fracas. but soon had to give way with his bad knee. He went into the game later. however, but remained only a short time and had to be assisted from the field. Delaware was outweighed about 20 pounds to the man. Magaw was the individual star for Delaware in the early part Of the contest, this little end breaking up many of the Penn plays in the early part of the game and causing the Heisman warriors to work on the right side of the line for their runs. Considerable sentiment has develop ed in favor of Delaware dropping the Penn game from its schedule Many of the alumni, especially have urged that this game be dropped for several \ years and some of them have never approved it. Veteran Maryland Editor Dead DELAWARE LOSES TO PENN First Football Game of Season Re- : suits in Overwhelming Defeat First Football Game of Season Resuits in Overwhelming Defeat University of Delaware Football team opened the season Saturday with the University of Pennsylvania and were swamped 20 to O. The first game on the home gridiron, Frazier Field, will be next Saturday, October l, with the strong Muhlenburg eleven as opponents. Sylvester Derby the new football coach will have the squad in much better shape by that time. Notwithstanding the large score run up on Delaware by the big Penn team last Saturday those who have watched the squad practice predict that Derby will develop a strong team. The Penn team was in no way a fair test. 1t was played so early in the season that there was not sufficient opportunity to prepare a team for such hard game and Derby being a new coach was doubly handicapped. There are eight more games. on the schedule of which number five will be played at home and 9 away. The complete schedule follows: October 1, Muhlenburg at Newark; October 8, Johns Hopkins at Baltimore; October Is, N. Y. Agricultural College at Newark; October 22, Haverford at Haverford; October %, Washington College at Newark; No vember 5, Western Maryland at Newark; November II, Lafayette at Easton, Pa; November 10, Pennsylvania Military College at Newark.
