BROWN HOLDS DARTMOUTH TO II TO SCORE Expected Easy Contest Becomes Struggle for Victory. HEAVY BACKFIELD WINS Hanoverians Hold FOemen, Who Become AggressOr Late in Game. Special Despatch to THE New York HERALD BosToN, Nov. 20.-Dartmouth just over Brown University in their annual game before 10000 at Braves Field this afternoon. The Green were out played for the greater part of the game, and Brown. with its men in a crippled condition, fought back throughout the entire struggle, which was bitterly contested. Dartmouths heavier back field was what saved her before leaving on her trip to Seattle. where next Saturday she engages in contest against Washington Uni versity. But to-day the Hanoverians which smeared Cornell and Pennsylvania looked upon Brown as being easy ana the game from their standpoint was big disappointment They were lucky In scoring the first touchdown in the opening quarter. when one of Captain Robertson’s punts was partly blocked by one of Browns linemen. Quarter back Oden permitted the ball to roll to the ix-yard line, where a Dartmouth man fell on it. The Brown quarterback did not know that the ball had been touched by one of his players. other wise 1t would have been an easy matter for him to have recovered. 1t necessitated three plays before Shelburne dove through for the touchdown, after which Cunningham kicked the goal Breaks Through Brown Line. In the second quarter Captain Robertson broke through the right side of the Brown line for dash of twenty four yards and a touchdown. The her culean leader of the Green virtually walked the first part of the journey. bowling over three or four tacklers before he got UP his speed and landed the ball on the coveted side OF the line. Again Cunningham kicked. Brown battled all the way, and In the third period Shurtleff who played a whale of a game broke through his OPP ponents and blocked Robertson’s at tempt to punt He not only blocked the ball, but recovered the ball, being thrown out of bounds by Robertson at Dartmouths 3S yard line. Then Brown opened up its attack and began throw ing forward passes. varied with dash into the line. The ball was advanced to tne ~ ydTu IIle, WntIt Outn He8Neu IL long forward pass. which Mallory took on the run and scampered over the goal line for a touchdown 1t was a brilliant play. Mallory evadng Dartmouth player who was in a good position to intercept the ball. Oden missed the goal Brown Becomes Aggressive. Spurred on by the scoring Of the touchdown, Brown became the agrees sor and late in the game carried the ball to Dartmouth’s yard line, where 1t was held for downs. 1t necessitated long punt by Capt Robertson to prevent Brown from being dangerous again. 1t was the best kick of the game and Brown was rushing the ball well In its own territory when the game finished in the darkness. Considering the weakness of the Brown team as a result of injuries. the showing of the men from Providence was remarkable. Williams. the star end was out of the game. and John stone. the regular right tackle. was I’M able to play. Browns backfleld combination was much lighter than the Dart mouth chargers, but as regards the playing of the line Brown was every bit as good as that of Dartmouth. The playing of Sonnenberg. Cunningham. Shelburne and Jordan was the best for t1t ltdI phuIN4cis Albright, Brooks, Gulian and Capt. Armstrong, who was forced to leave the game because of bad knee, were the conspicuous players in the Brown armament. The lineup: Dartmouth 40. Brown (G. Moore. Left end. .........
