NAVY FOOTBALL TEAM DEFEATS ARMY, 7 TO 0; DARTMOUTH is WINNER over WASHINGTON u” Sailors Plunge Through the Soldiers Lines and Triumph in Annual Gridiron Clash; Koehler’s Playing Features; $4,000 Spectators Witness Game on Polo Grounds. New York, Nov. q. - Line plunges with uperdroadnaugh backs, aided by smoke screen of delayed and double passes, enabfed Navy to triumph over Army z to 0 in their annual gridiron clash at the Polo grounds today, When, early in the fourth period, Ben G.. Koehler. of Geneva, Neb., former star at the University of Nebraska, crashed over the Armys last white line on a double pass play that started seven yards from the goal, Navy officials among the $4,000 spectators could draw an analogy between the main reliance of football offense and that of actual battles at sea. Both elevens had found the forward pass ineffective for great gains. Modern Tactics Discarded. Discarding modern aeriag tactics, Navy relied on the battleship tackle, smashes from a close square formation, so efficiently that after the touchdown was made another was prevented only by a tumble fourteen-yards from tho goal. “Come eleven” had been, the Navy slogan In preparation for the game and eleven came, meaning the eleventh victory for Annapolis over West Point, which makes the series even. While future admirals gamboled in a snake dance over the gridiron, Josephus Daniels saw his last Army Navy game. as secretary of the navy end in victory for the seamen. He and Secretary Baker, General Pershing, General Nevelle of France and other officials joshed one another boastingly on the field between the halves when the score was Gall. While sailors and wounded A. f. F. veterans, who were side line guests, gathered round, the army chiefs felt conf dent, for In the first half the Navy never had ball in Army’s terri tory, and the Army had been near enough to Nays goal to try to place kick three times. Break Came In Third Period. The break came near the end OF the third period. A punt by the Army fran it’s thirty-four-yard line went outside and netted only twelve Yards. A forward pass OF eight wards and a six-yard line buck by Conroy gave the Navy first down twenty-five yards from the Armys goal as the fourth period opened. Then came the change of tactics Toball seven yards from the Army } goal and gave the Navy a tlrsl down there. On the next play, smoke screen was thrown OUT: Hamilton, Navy fullback, started from a close formation as II to buck Armys right guard. Conroy’ instead, passed the ball to Noye then to right fullback, and in turn gave it to Koehler, who plunged through Army’s left tackle for a touchdown. King kicked goal. Nays First Down. Receiving the ensuing kickoff on its own 17-yard line. Navy ran II back fourteen yards and after four teen line plunges had a first down fourteen yards from the goal. Con- ROY and Koehler again worked the same double pass play. 1t led 10 one 20-yard gain by Koehler IN the course of this advance ana Conroy himself made several smashes of five and six yards. Noyes fumbled. however, and the Army on its own 14yard line start ed a desperate effort to tie the score. French made a 14-yard run from kick formation on the first lineup and raised the hopes of the cadets, who were waving mega phones that formed the letters ~. s. A.” In gray. black and gold. The rally was short lived. however. The Army tried forward passes, but the sailors knew how to check them and Army’s hopes died when a for ward pass was intercepted in mid field by Waters. substitute full back. When the game ended Navy had the ball on Army’s AZ yard line. The figures show that fifty-five rushing plays gained Navy 1856 yards net. of which eighty eight yards were gained in twenty-five plays in the last period. The Navy
