HARVARD TR|uMPHS BY SMALL MARGIN OVER COAST TEAM Eastern Football Champs Take New Year Game From Ore gon 7 to 6-Both Miss Fur ther Chances to Score. Pasadena, Cal, Jan. 2.-Eastern football supremacy was upheld when the Harvard gridiron team defeated Oregon university here yesterday by a score of to 6. One lone touchdown forced over the line by Church of Harward proved the winning play for the men who, came 5000 miles to play the northwest champions before the largest crowd of football fans that ever witnessed a game on the Pacific coast. Oregon’s six points were made through field goals, Kicked by Steers and Manerud! Late in the last quarter. oregon perhaps lost it’s chance to win the game when attempts to kick soa by both Steers and Manerud failed CRIMSON STARS SHINE. When the final whistle blew the ball was within a few inches Of the Oregon goal line. with both teams fighting like demons. The Horween brothers and Casey of Harvard were the outstanding lights OF the Crimson team. The line buck ing of A. Horween especially in the last period was a revelation to the fans, who thought Harvard’s chances for victory were greatly lessened when Ralph Horween was taken out OF the game through injuries. Bill Steers, the 1S0-pound Oregon quarterback, was the star of the Lem on-yellow. His punting out -distanced the Harvard kickers. SLIGHT ADVANTAGE. The advantage in weight averaging 10 pounds per man held by the Harward team failed to give them a much better showing at hitting the line. Haryard lost the ball on downs, six inches from the Oregon goal just before the final whistle. Neither team was able to carry the ball through consistently until near the end of the final quarter, when Harvard staged momentary procession down the field. The early periods were marked by frequent punting by both sides. Sew eral fumbles and a number of attempt ed forward passes gave the crowd sew eral anxious moments. Harvard’s victory was due to slightly superior team work, in the opinion of football experts. The Oregon players overcame the Crimsons advantage in weight with the wonderfully game fight, but they lacked the machine like team play which was shown by the Crimson. ss E&
