TIGERS MEET WITH CRUSHING DEFEAT,25 TOO Rodgers Leads Attack for West Virginia Gridiron Warriors. GIVES GREAT EXHIBITION Fullback’s Offensive Play Thrills-Princeton Regu- lars Missing. GIVES GREAT EXHIBITION BY GEORGE b. UNDERWOOD. PRINCETON, Nov. Princeton players will go into the game with Harvard here next week with the sting of an over whelming defeat by West Virginia rank ling in their breasts Led by Bill Rodgers, 1913 pounds of bulldog aggressiveness and greyhound speed the Mountaineers threw the Tigers into a panic with splendidly executed forward passing at tack in the first and final periods here on a water logged gridiron to-day, four times crossing the sacred white Nassau goal line and rolling up rs to score. There was no stopping of Rodgers. who gavet as thrilling an exhibition of offensive play as ever delighted the heart Of football fan. He battered his way through Princeton’s centre, knived ‘twixt tackle and end and skirted the tanks for comfortable gains repeatedly. 1t was his accurately hurled forward passes however, that tied the most knots in the Tigers tail. Had not Rodgers suddenly collapsed at the start of the second period and requ.red the attention OF the doctors I’M til the final quarter started, when he again returned to the fray. the triumph OF the Mountaineers would have been an even more sweeping one. Action Starts Quickly. Rodgers hurled his first barb into the tanks of the Tigers in exactly one min ute after the first throwing out of the skirmishing lines. 1t was a forward pass TO Hager. twenty-three yards from Princeton’s 4e yard line to the 10 yard line. Another forward pass Melted seven yards and then in four smashes at the line Rodgers went over for the touch down. The first touchdown was scored in the | first two minutes OF play. Four minutes later. chiefly through a fifteen yard end skirt by Rodgers. followed by another brilliantly executed forward pass. the Mountaineers bagged their second touch down. Rodgers kicked goal and ran West | Virginia’s score up to IS. Before the first period was over the Mountaineers’ chief again drove q thrust straight into the vitals OF the Tiger. an eighteen yard forward pass to Ffager turning the trick. Rodgers CoIIapses. Early in the second period Rodgers. playing back on the defence, suddenly | WdNcu 10 TIC TeItret, reeleu, sWaNeu ana | dropped to tho ground. He was brought to and fought hard to resume play, but Coach Mcintyre and the doctors would rot permit it. The Mountaineers’ leader was assisted to the sllelines, and Neale. a brother Of GREASY” Neale. the Cincinnatl outfielder and former collegiate gridiron star. took his place in the Virginia backfeld. With Rodgers out of the battle front Dali. t., n,,l, during the remainder Of the second pc Rod and third period. At the start OF the final quarter a wild roar from the Virginia section signalled the return OF Rodgers TO the fray. Once again he proved Princetons Nemesis A Virgins drive. punctuated’ with smashes at the line and occasional aerial losses by Rod gers, brought the ball to Princeton’s is yard line where Lentz fumbled and the Tigers captured the ball. Scheerer punted to Rodgers, who in a corkscrew dash through the Princeton front ran the ball back from the IS ward line to Princeton’s 81 yard line In three ; plays-one a smash through tackle fol nine yards by Dawson-Virginia was esconced on Princeton’s IL yard line There Rodgers shot a forward pass to Martin behind the goal for Virginia fourth touchdown Four Tiger Regulars Missing. Princeton faced West Virginia with four of the Tiger regulars missing from the lineup Strubing at quarter was the only regular Princeton back who was ir harness, and stan” Keck’s place at left tackle was filled by Capt McGraw, who war moved over from guard, Morgan taking McGraw’s old place next tc centre. II Princeton’s three absent backfelC regulars had been IN the lineup the Tiger might have scored. but that By no means is certain. The three back field men. however, would have added little defensive strength, and the lineuI the Crane and Black will face Harvard with next Saturday probably would b’ . Just as Intellectual against Rodgers anc Virglnias forward passing attack as thu Tiger proved to-day. The game emphasized the fact tina Princeton has a crude defense agains the forward pass and that a good aeria attack by Harvard is likely to wreal havoc next week Colgate’s forward , passing bothered Princeton last week and Virginia’s aerial maneuvres Devil dered the Tiger, tot day. II is enoourag ing to the Princeton supporters how ever, that Harvards forward passing ii not up TO Colgate’s standard, and GER tainly far less effective than the brilhantly executed aerial attack with which the mountaineers backed the Tiger r Down the field to-day. ! Tigers Forward Passes Fail. AS regards the forward pass, Prince ton was extensively as weak as defen sively as the Tigers tried fourtee : passes and failed TO complete a singl ,. one. On the other hand. Virginias te a out OF eighteen Melted a total OF IS r yards. The Tigers lone source of Joy lay 1 the punting of Scheerer, who in bot { distance and accuracy showed himsel 4 to be a remarkable booter. Even O n the slippery field his punts average 2 more than SO yards and he got two ava y for 65 yards. Standing on Princeton Il As yard line In the second quarter h booted SIS yards against the wind acros n the Virginia line. 1t was remarkabl punt n Strubing was we’ll covered by tn Mountaineers. and the slippery and ell !, sive Princetonian seldom was above TO break free. Murrey. at left halfbacl showed flashes of brilliancy, but liz the rest of the Princeton backs he wa : handicapped by the Tiger forwards bein

PRINCETON SWAMPED BY THE HUSKY VlRGiNIANS West Virginia’s husky eleven invaded Princeton Saturday and swept the Tig- CTS completely off their feet smother ing them under a score of 25 to 0. Three of the touchdowns were made within ten minutes after the initial kickoff. The Mountaineers unloosed such whirwind attack of line plunges, end runs and forward passes that the Princeton team was utterly bewilder- ed and during the first quarter looked more like a schoolboy aggregation than a college eleven Nineteen points were scored before the Tigers came out of their daze and began to stem the tide During the second and third quarters the play swayed up and down the field but in the last period with only few | seconds to play long forward pass from Rogers was caught by King back of the goal line. adding six more
