PITT STUNNED BY SYRACUSE Glenn Warmers Football Team Vanquished by “a to 3 Count. SURPRISE BY UP-STATERS Overcome Panthers’ Strategy by Powerful Rushes in Arch bold Stadium. SURPRISE BY UP-STATERS by Powerful Rushes in Arch bold Stadium. Special Despatch to THE Sun. SYRACUSE, Oct. 1s.-The chimes rang loud and long over this city tonight in celebration of the victory that the Syracuse University football team won over the Wanted eleven of the University of Pittsburg in Archbold Stadium this afternoon. The score was “a to 3 and the football world stood still for the nonce to marvel over the defeat Of Warmers stalwart eleven. The game was all that the score would indicate, but 1t cannot tell the story Of how two Syracuse marches that would undoubtedly have resulted in touchdowns were stopped by fumbles. 1t cannot tell how half a dozen penalties, imposed for men being illegally In motion before the ball was passed-checked advances that had the Orange stands believing organized and discrganized cheers of encouragement. The Pitt attack. brilliant and hashy as 1t threatened to be, never had a chance TO develop its full power for the reason that the Syracuse forwards ripped through the lines and banged things up before they ever had chance TO get under way. Every bit of strategy installed into the minds of the Painters by n Glenn Warner wa overcome by savage, relentless rushes of Syracuse men The waves Of Pitts attack beat harmlessly on the Orange lane and fell back broken and spent as the sea shore waves roll back off the rock bound coasts. Three touchdowns three goals from touchdown and goal from placement were won by Syracuse after pulse quicksning struggle up and down the field. Pittsburg, which smashed the Orange in 1915 and 1917. was forced to rest with one field goal which Red Hastings shot over from placement in the second period. That goal came from the only chance that the Painters had to do things. It came as a final resort after a running attack had failed. Scores Come Quickly. Scores came quickly. Almost before the crowd had settled IN its seats the , first points were played to the credit of | the Orange. Segel kicked Off to De Hart on Pitts 20 yard line and Capt. Jimmie came back just few strikes when he Morrow fumbled and Ackley recovered ! for Syracuse. Three rushes failed to gain materially and then Ackley, step | ping back to the 80 yard line, shot goal from the field from placement. | Such signal success won so early in the game had tonic effect upon SYRIA cuse. The boys were vlsibly nervous | when they stopped out on the field to start the contest. They remembered the previous games against the Pittsburg | bunch. | Now, however, 1t was different. The invulnerabe giant had been winged hurt | and brought to his knees. Now to finish the job. With vim the Orange went at | the task and in no time thanks to the ! scintillant work OF Erwig, the ball was placed on position for Ackey to take | 1t over. In the second period Ackley again crossed the line after Erwig had ripped off a run for twenty-five yards Martin got the last touchdown in the | Anal period The Syracuse attack was cyclonic. 1t | was not diversified as that which Pittsburg attempted to discover to the | opposition, but It was more successful | for the reason that the forwards in the | Orange line played together and charged with fierce aggressiveness, holding their formation as they drove the Pan’hers ! back on their heels. The interference of Syracuse. headed by Erwig, Ackley and again by Erwig, was the last word In compactness and speed, The rowing back took out the end and the right swept iiercely around, bowling over the opposition with fierce take out or the terrific use of stiff arm. Deception in Formation. Generally the play went in the direc, ton indicated by the rowing back. but deception entered into this formation too for Martin ripped through for a score on buck through the short side thai had the Pitt forwards completely BAN boozled, A nifty crisscross that gained nearly thirty yards showed Pitt that It! own stun could be used against it will telling effect. Btl Erwig the New York boy viii, played with Morris High School in hi! days of apprenticeship in football. stood out in bold relief. Bill failed to cross the Panther line himself but he madD two of the three touchdowns by his team possible. He ripped of one run of flftl yards that preceded touchdown. Again he ran thirty yards which ultimately le, to a touchdown, and mis- zigzag journey for eight, nine and ten yards were al most too frequent to note. He was al , ways in the thickest Of the fighting Johnnie Barsh was a line snashe } who added power to the battering ran , attack of the victors, while Fallow, ! replacement. and Abbott crashed ant banged the line until the Painters wer weak and gasping from the shock. II the first line of defense Capt. Josepl Alexander stood like the French at III Marine. He rallied his men to ever. charge and royalty did they serve tibet : great leader. No Panthers came througl l left guard here to-day When they ad I vanced TO that position Alexander’s saw 4 age charges rolled them back { Robertson. the big centre, was n bear / cat on the line. He simply smeared IN D life out of Stein until the latter wa willing to compromise on any play at al 4 Before three minutes had elapse : from the first period Syracuse scored 4 field goal.
