WESTERN FOOTBALL /. ! FURNISHES UPSETS Nebraska Holds Minnesota Even, and IllinoisIs Barely Able to Defeat Purdue y 124 POINTS FOR CHICAGO Coach Stages Team Piles Up Big Score With Use of OnlyFive Plays. 124 POINTS FOR CHICAGO In the West last Saturday there were two big genes and both Of them fur nished surprises. Minnesota battled vainiy against Nebraska in. a 6 to 9 tie game. and Illinois was glad to get out OF Lafayette witlrsa IA to q victory over Purdue. Dr. Williams Minnesota eleven has for years had habit of playing one poor game each season, and twill be a fortunate, thing for the, Gophers If this should prove true again, with their slump having happened in a game which did them no harm. 1t is inconcelvable that team OF the power of Minnesota can be thrown Ia any game before the Michigan tilt, which closes the Gopher season. The showing of Illinois is inexpifcsble. The Illinois either have been greatly overrated or have failed to gather proper momentum this early. The Purdue tilt was their first of the season. Despite the Indifferent showing OF Illinois Coach Zuppke expressed salts faction at the play of his team. and expoets to defeat Iowa this week. Iowa is the conqueror OF Nebraska. which tied the Minnesota team. Chicago scores mt VIII. Chicago delighted its followers by running up 124 points on the Great Lakes eleven. This is a hollow victory. however, since the naval team Is merely an ordinary service team now, and has none of the stars of national fame who brought the service championship to Great Lakes last year. The Maroon was able to accumulate its big total against Great Lakes by L., x,CfF mi plays. DIR. Stage used almost three COM piete teams. but the substitutes scored as rapidly as their varsity brothers. Ohio continued to prepare Tor its Michigan game by taking University OF Cincinnati into camp, 46 to 0. Capt. Harley, as usual, was the centre of the Buckeye offence, and led his mates IN scoring. Coach Wilce has constructed II powerful scoring machine, and is bend ing every effort to beat Michigan when his team meets the Wolverines in Ann Arbor October 20. Beating Michigan” long has been a slogan at Ohio. but a slogan is about all it ever has been. In fifteen games stretching over period of twenty-five years Michigan has played Ohio ffteen times and has won thirteen games and tied two. Ohio has yet to taste victory and has scored a total of only 81 points on the Wolverine eleven. De Pnuw. Plays Well. De PAW proved to be. stronger team than Northwestern expected. and the Purple had to open it’s bag of tricks TO gain 20 to o victory. Northwestern faces Wisconsin this week, and Coach Backman. dissatisfied with the showing OF his team, announced that the Purple players would get severe drills in preparation for the Badger tilt Wisconsin did not show anyN too we’ll either. being held to 1S to 0 by. Mar quette. The Badger defence was dis tressingly loose, and the attack seemed to have no drive. 80 III Indiana. which managed to hold Gem tire College to a IL to score last Saturday, showed more good football by win ming its game against kentucky.24 to o. In fits 60 TO o victory oven Mt. Union, usually a hard knot for the bigger teams to- crack, Notre Dame showed decided Improvement over its clore call last week in the Kalamazoo game. In view of the hard struggle that the Michigan Aggies have had. their 81 20 Is defeat at the hands of Kalamazoo Normal caused no surprise. The Aggie team has sunk to its old standard OF the days before 1t sprang into prominence, and seems doomed to disastrous season. The Agsles play Michigan in Ann -Arbor next Saturday. . Iowa and Michigan did not play this week on account of Western confer ence rule which allows only seven aaines, forcing each. team to spend one day in idteness.

NEBRASKA UNI. |ELEVE n HOLDS MINNESOTA Even 1 Cornhuskers Spring Surprise and Tie Score in Last Quar- ter of Hard Game With the Gophers. . Minneapolis, Mimi, Oct. H. Especial Telegram.) - That same eleven-man driving power which made the “Stiehm roller” famous in the west on the gridiron in the years gone by enabled Coach Henry Schulte’s 1919 Nebraska Cornhuskers to lower the naughty banner of the Minnesota Gophers and subject them to the humiliation of a 6 to E tie. TO Nebraska the game was a victory. 1t was ragged, bum and brilliant foot ball all messed in the same boiling pot. The Huskers showed a speed and foot ball ability that is little less than marvellous. Gridiron rooters gave them the advantage in this afternoons game at Northrop field. On paper the Huskers are said to have won. Right from the start the Corn huskers began their attack. Suffice to say, that the Gophers entered the field with feeling of haugh.y aloofness that developed into laughable spectacle in the first quarter. The Nebraska backs. Howarth and Cap tain Dobson, evidently smarting I’M der the 10 to 0 defeat suffered at Iowa week ago. tore through the line for gain after gain. Use Aerial Route. The Nebraskans brought into play a bit of aerial work that was brilliant. Dale to Kellogg and Howarth to Dobson and Dobson to Swanson were forward pass combinations that brought frequent gains. The Nebraska ends. Swanson and Kellogg, who have been the weak point in the Husker machine, played with sterling sureness.. Minnesota, however, proved a powerful conner. On taking the ball after Dobson punted into Gopher territory the Minnesota backs. Phil lips. Ruben, Haertel and Captain Lamp, tore through the Huskers line and around the ends for long and repeated gains. -., At one time in the second quarter. just preceding the Gopher score, the Minnesota lads made first downs on three successive occasions bringing the ball from their own territory to within striking dis tance. Haertel scored for Mime sofa. Schellenberg Star. Schellenberg ran IS yards for d touchdown for Nebraska in the last quarter. The latter score, with the run accompanying. was the most brilliant play Of the game. The Huskcr back took the ball on the Gopher 35-yard line and i1urdling eight yards through left tackle, paused the fraction of a second as two stalwart Minnesota linemen made move as if to tackle him. Twisting OH his left foot the fleet Nebraska star veered to the right and, running through scattered team with five men rushing before and beside him as interference, crossed the goal line. The score was greeted with tumult. A few seconds later. however. Dale, giant Husker fullback, missed goal. Early in the second quarter when the Minnesota back, Haertel, had scored touchdown, it was Ed Ruben who missed the goal and the point that might have meant victory. Husker Line Wins. | 1t was the Husker line that won. Bearing up under the powerful at tacks of the Minnesota backs. who are conceded among the best in the west, the line held on almost every occasion that warranted. But for the few minutes in the second period when the Minnesota machine was going at its best. the line played the entire game on the defensive. Three times during the game the Huskers had their chance to score. On one occasion when Quarterback McGlasson chose to make the for ward pass the regular thing the team Unanswered four downs, vast ing as many forward passes. Two passes, Dobson to McGlasson, long and rangy, were muffed by the Ne
