No. 2 Georgia went to Tuscaloosa and beat No. 6 Alabama 20–17. Georgia is 6–0, and it’s Kirby Smart’s first regular-season win over Alabama, and Georgia’s first in the series since 2007.
This was Gunner Stockton’s game. He went 18 of 22 for 249 yards, threw a touchdown and ran for another, and Dwight Phillips Jr. ran for 120 yards on 17 carries. Georgia outgained Alabama 455 to 346 and had the ball for more than 33 minutes.
Alabama led 14–10 at halftime after EJ Crowell scored from a yard out with three seconds left, and Conor Talty tied it 17–17 in the third. Peyton Woodring missed from 39 early in the fourth, then hit from 23 to put Georgia up 20–17 with 5:25 left.
Alabama’s last real chance ended at the Georgia 34. KJ Bolden broke up a deep ball on second down (Kalen DeBoer wanted pass interference), then Bolden and Valdin Sone sacked Keelon Russell for 9 yards on third down, and Alabama punted.
Then Alabama finished it for them. On second-and-3 with 2:20 left, a late personal foul handed Georgia a first down and Stockton knelt out the rest. DeBoer was not happy about it. Fifteen free yards when Georgia needed three is a rough way to lose a game this big.
Texas lost to Oklahoma, so Georgia has the best case for No. 1 when the new poll comes out. Next week Georgia hosts Auburn, and Alabama goes to Tennessee.
