Compton’s Jalen Woods gives UCLA a defensive answer at Oregon

Nine tackles. Two tackles for loss. A recovered fumble. Jalen Woods put his name all over a defensive performance that helped UCLA leave Oregon with a 17–15 win on October 10.

Woods is from Compton, California, and played at St. John Bosco High in Bellflower. The two places are different parts of his story: Compton is home; Bosco was his high-school football stop before UCLA.

UCLA held Oregon to 89 yards through three quarters and 73 rushing yards for the game. Woods led the Bruins in tackles, and the Big Ten named him its Defensive Player of the Week on October 12.

The defensive work mattered in a game decided by two points. Woods’ numbers show why a hometown story can belong to the player stopping a drive just as much as the one finishing it.
