Fort Payne’s Alex McPherson delivers the kick that beats No. 1 Georgia

A 34-yard kick, no time remaining and a 27–24 Auburn win: Alex McPherson delivered the finish against No. 1 Georgia.

Before the winning kick in Athens, there was Fort Payne, Alabama. McPherson played at Fort Payne High School before becoming Auburn’s answer with the game on the line.

He had already put Auburn ahead once on October 17. His 49-yard field goal with 1:20 left in the second quarter gave the Tigers a 17–14 halftime lead.

Georgia eventually pulled even at 24–24. A forced fumble by Cody Sigler and recovery by Sylvester Smith-Reed gave Auburn another chance in the final minute.

McPherson finished that chance from 34 yards as the clock expired. The Fort Payne graduate left Sanford Stadium with the kick that separated Auburn from the country’s top-ranked team.
