South Dakota and West Point Next Opponents on Har- per’S Schedule. With the important Wisconsin and Nebraska games behind them, Coach Harper’s prOteges will COM mence practice tomorrow for the an nual struggle with South Dakota on Cartier field Saturday. and for the yearly intersectional battle with the Army at West Point, a week from Saturday. In normal years these two battles are looked forward TO with apprehension by Notre Dame; in this war befuddled season ii is with outright fear that the gold and blue approaches such formidable opponents. The South Dakota Coyotes have appeared twice before at Notre Dame. and Notre Dame has on al ternate years jVurneyed to Sioux Falls. In 1913, when Knute ROckne. the present line coach, was captain Of Notre Dame, the western ers were defeated after a terrific bat tie on Cartier field by the score of 20 to Z. 1t is regarded by some Tocal authorities as the greatest foot ball battle ever fought at Notre Dame. IN 1914 the powerful y. d. machine, more accustomed to the South Dakota style of football, was victorious, 33 TO 0. A year later South Dakota threw a great scare into Notre Dame by holding the gold and blue 10 a TO score, and the lone touchdown was not made until the game was nearly over. Last year Notre Dame won at Sioux Falls, 81 20 n ia o. ceedingly hard fought, and if reports from South Dakota during the present season can be given credence the Coyotes are hoping to take advantage of the situation that has left the Notre Dame team practical “ veteran-less and slip over their first victory. Meets Army Nov. 3. On Nov. 3 Notre Dame takes part in what has become to be recognized as the greatest of all intersectional classics-the Army game at West Point. History shows that the teams in the past have been exact | ~ on a par. NOtre Dame won the first game played at the school on ! the Hudson in 1913. That year the Dorias- Rockne forward passing | com bination startled the whole foot ball world, and the cadets were | given the worst beating they ever / suffered, 35 10 Is. With an i’m | proved defense against Notre Danes / bewildering aerial attack the Army was victorious. 90 to s, in 1914. But ! in 1915 Dutch” Bergman caught a long forward pass in the fourth | quarter of the game and sprinted | half the length of the field for the only touchdown Of the afternoon, ! allowing Notre Dame to win, 7 TO 0. | The OHphant-Vidal duo was too much for Notre Dame in 1916 and | the Army won, 80 TO 10. This year eastern papers tell of the great strength of the West Point school. The original schedule Of the future officers was cancelled and the one they are playing now was i’m / provised late in August. NOtre ! Dame was fortunate to retain the same date under the latter arrange ment The Army still have Oliphant and Vidal, and some new whirlwind recruits, composing a team that has not met a difficulty thus far. No ire Dame is in a bad plight, but is far from beaten before the two teams meet.
