GENERALS VICTORY BIGGEST SURPRISE OF EASTERN GAMES Defeat of Navy Shows That Southern Elevens Are Not Weak-Big Three Are Winners New York. November 5.-Wa shington and Lees impressive victory over the Navy eleven at Annapolis Saturday was one of the big surprises of the weekend football play. and it demon- strated by reason of the fact that the Generals only last week had been held to a tie by Georgia Tech, that southern teams no longer may be held too lightly by the big eastern ma chimes. Had it been necessary, it is prob able Washington and Lee could have made additional touchdowns, but the winners elected to play defensive foot ball after their early scoring. In view of the wide range of the victor’s play it is likely that the Navy coaches will be able to correct weaknesses not heretofore suspected in the Middies’ game. Virginia, the only other southern team to invade the east, gave the liar ward squad little more than an aft ernoon’s practice. The Crimson used many substitutes and never was in danger. Yale was particularly fortunate in defeating the strong college aggre- gation. The team from Hamilton out played the Blue, but the breaks of the game and a remarkable exhibition of defensive strength at a critical period swung victory to the Eli. The defeat of Notre Dame by the Army was extremely gratifying to the Soldiers, especially as they used al- most exclusively the overhead tactics introduced at West Point by the h. dianians so effectively three years ago. The victory demonstrated that the Sol- diers are rounding out one of the strongest teams in West Point for many years. For all round brilliance the Dartmouth Syracuse game was the feature of the day. The speed and dash of Dartmouth was the winning fs sctor but Syracuse made the game thrilling at all stages. Buckneu was too weak to bring out anything unusual in Princetcn’s rep ertoire and Cornell and Pennsyl vania, though they came through with victories over Carnegie Tech and La- fayette, respectively, showed that they still were teams in the making. The victories of Brown and Pittsburg were in the same category but Rutgers found Holy Cross foeman worthy of her best football and only hard work brought victory. Ohio State and Northwestern univer- sity will fight it out for the 1916 Championship of the western “nig nine at Columbus. O.. November 24. These two teams have caused the two biggest upsets seen in years. Northwestern ‘ to 0 triumph over Indiana, Ohio States 14 to 13 victory over Wisconsin and the II to 9 down. fall of Minnesota at the hands of Illi- nois were the distinct surprises of Saturdays games.
