BROOK|NGS CLAIMS CHAMPIONSHIPS HIGH SCHOOL HAS ALMOST CLEAR CLAIM FOR STATE HoNoRs ON 81 TO o HURON VICTORY COLLEGE GETS f0UR-STATE REMNANT 6 to o Mitchell Victory Gives State North and South Dakota, Iowa and Nebraska Collegiate Honors BrOOKlnSS last week. by winning from Huron high by the decisive score Of “a to 0 he local high school team has now an almost ~undisputable claim on the state cham pionship honors. To State College went the collegiate championship of North and South Dakota, Iowa and Nebraska when they defeated Dakota Wesleyan of Mitchell 6 to 0. State and Wesleyan had each suffered only one defeat prior to last weeks game and that at the hands OF the same school, the State University, but those games do not affect the col legiate championship. Wesleyan, by defeating Morningside Il to 0, secured the title of college champion of Iowa and Nebraska, which up to that time the Sioux City team had claimed. State wrested the title from Coach Dillon’s aggregation last Saturday and secured that of North Dakota by defeating the North Dakota Aggies at Watertown the Week DtiOit. High School Honors In Middle State championship honors among South Dakota high schools are in a muddled condition and can only be decided by comparative scores. Redfield and Bookings have only been defeated but once but Brookings’ scores against teams that Redield defeated were sew eral times greater. Huron was defeat ed by Redfeld 6 to 0 while Bookings turned around last week and did the trick “a to O. With each comparison of scores the ~Brookings boys have the edge over their nearest rivals, Redfeld, and the local school feels justified in making it’s claim of state champion. BY defeating Redwood Falls, Min nesota championship claimants, the locals are also in line for the duo champion honors. Brookings will journey to Pierre and meet the state capital high team on Thanksgiving day. The game, how ever, will have no bearing upon the championship honors since Huron defeated Pierre. State Outpoints Mitchell States somewhat battered football team, although showing the effects of the two North Dakota and the University games, went into the Dakota Wesleyan game last Saturday with the most fight” of any game this season and emerged with a 6 to 0 victory. 1t vas a battle royal and not without a brilliant struggle did the Mitchell team allow the locals to carry away the honors. First the advantage belonged to one team then the other, and from the spectators standpoint the game was a hummer” States lonely touchdown came in the second quarter and it was enough to win the game. In the last five min utes of play Mitchell showed cham pionship strength and by terrific line plunges rushed the ball to States T. yard line for a possible touchdown. At the critical point Payne fumbled and was downed for a 10-yard loss. The game Saturday was the last for several members of both teams. To States men the victory is a worthy end of their football career, while Mitchell need not feel disgraced over the defeat as 1t was simply a case of the better team winning. States backfeld, Skinner, Rowe, Hoover and S~heehan. played a brilliant game. Rowe played his best game OF the season Saturday while Skinner, as usual, was a source of considerable worry to his opponents. Gage at right end made a name for himself by his breaking up end runs and tackling and will I’M doubtedly be in the regular lineup next year. Captain Nelson and Cleve Abbott ended their State careers such as will not be forgotten by the school. Hine, Payne and Collins were the Methodists stellar lights, but a stiff wind prevented the formers much touted successful forward passing. Payne Tries Drop Kick Mitchell won the toss and chose to receive at the west goal with the wind at their backs. Stevens kicked OF and Wesleyan’s runner was downed on his SO-yard line. Mitchell’s backneld start cd strong and advanced the ball to the 66-ysrd line where Payne. who holds the world’s record for the longest drop kick. attempted to boot the ball over the bars. The kick fell short and Skinner ran the ball back to the 81 gard llne. Rows. Hoover and Skinner made – yards but Mitchell then held ana shtnn1r grated 70 Hine who was
