MICHIGAN AND QUAKERS IN A SCORELESS TIE Pennsylvania ElevenClose to Victory, but Lacks Decisive Punch. BELL MISSES EASY CHANCE FOR GOAL Wolverines Uraola to Penetrate Defence OF Opponents and Never Threaten Danger. Philadelphia, Nov. 13.-Lack of the final punch prevented the University OF Pennsylvania football team from beating Michigan this afternoon. AT the end OF sixty minutes of fierce play the score stood to 0. Four times during the game the Quakers took the ball close enough TO Michigan’s goal 20 score either by the touchdown or drop kick route. Once Michigan’s defence was sufficient to turn back the Red and Blue. The other three times Pennsylvania did not prop erly execute its own plays. Only once did Michigan get inside the Quakers’ 25-yard line, so impenetrable was Penn sylvanias defence. There were $4,000 football enthuslasts out to see tho inter-sectional bat tie. Pennsylvania was desperate to win not only to start the team on the up grade after a disastrous preliminary season, but because this was RED Let ter Day” the anniversary of the found ing By Benjamin Franklin of the Char ity School, which later became the Uni versity of Pennsylvania. Each student body had its band, and in addition, the sailors and officers of the U. 5. ). Michigan, now at League Island, had their musical organization along. The trouble with PENIS attack was its lack of versatility. The only ground gaining play the Quakers had was a tandem attack on tackle. Between the 25-yard marks It ripped the Michigan line wide apart with big gains by Derr and Williams. But once inside the 20-yard line even Michigan’s defence was sufficient TO check II. Twice the Red and Blue got the ball . inside Michigan’s l5-yard line. In the frst quarter the Quakers got it cn q Michigan tumble on the Wolverines Award line. Two oifside penalties ant J two fve-yard gains by Williams took ! the ball TO the 20-yard mark. Then Derr and Williams smashed their way | through to the 10-yard line in two more plunges. A penalty for offside set the Red ant ! Blue back five yards. Hopkins made I’D five yards and Derr could get only ! two yards on a centre plunge. With eight yards needed on the fourth dowr and with the ball directly In front o. the goal Bell tried forward pass In stead Of a drop kick and Michigan go ! the ball back Of the goal for touch back This was the nearest the Quakers go TO Mchigan’s goal all afternoon though n few minutes earlier Bell. af ter making a free catch on the VOL VERNE 37-yard line, made a mess of drop kick instead of trying kick from placement. Michigan was dangerous just once That was at the beginning of the sec ond period A splendid 20-yard run b, Smith, following a few short plunge by Maulbetsch and Catlett, took the bal to midfeld. Here Michigan pulled off ; 25-yard forward pass from Roehm e Nieman which took the ball 70 the 20 yard line. Michigan thought the bal could be taken over By line plunging but after three attempts the Wolver ines had lost a total OF FIVE yards. HOLDS PHILADELPHIA, November 13- Pennsylvania and Michigan fought their annual foot ball battle on Frank lin Field today and neither side was able to score. 1t was a curious fact that each team had been defeated the last three times it had met an. opponent on the gridiron and in the fourth effort neither was able to gain victory over the other. The game was disappointment, to the followers of the teams. Pennsylvania entered the contest a light ia vorite, while the Michigan supporters felt confident that despite their dis astrous. season the Wolverines would pull themselves together in their last game of the year and take victory west with them. Both teams put up fairly good foot ball. The playing most of the time was spirited and abounded in open field work. Pennsylvania had more chances to score than Michigan, but when IN the last ditch the westerners always braced and their defense was able to staye off defeat The Pennsylvantans got within scoring distance about half dozen times and on three of these occasions tried to kick field goals.
