MANDY MAY RIGHTLY CLAIM CHAMPIONSHIP Result of Georgia Tech Game and Auburn’s De- feat Decides Battle for South’s Highest GridirOn Honors Virginia Still Wins-Aggies Down Tennessee Atlanta, November 14.-Vanderbilt’s de- cisive victory yesterday at Birmingham over Auburn, while the University ot Georgia was outplaying Georgia Tech, the third remaining aspirant to cham pionship honors, and holding them to a scoreless tie, generally is regarded as having shown that Vanderbilt may rightly claim championship football honors in the old Southern Intercollegiate Athletic association territory Virginia is not re- garded as being in this. territory. The Commodores outplayed Auburn yesterday in every department of the game. The Plansmens goal line had not been crossed in two years and heretofore they had had punch which was always goodsfor a touchdown or two, while their opponents could not score. But against Vanderbilt the Plainsmen clearly were not up to form. The Commodores made two touchdowns and scored again on Codys field goal. Auburn could not score. Vanderbilt in beating Auburn increased it’s total points against teams in the old Southern Intercollegiate Athletic asso- citation territory to 476, without point be- ing made against Vanderbilt. Auburn al ready had beaten Georgia and Georgia Tech. while unbeaten this season, was outplayed, though neither team scored Tn yesterday s game with the Red and Black. Tech and Vanderbilt are not scheduled to play against each other this season. but on Thanksgiving Day Tech and Auburn play here. Should Auburn defeat Tech, all doubt as to Vanderbilts superiority would be eliminated. In the Vanderbilt-Auburn game yester- day the Plainsmen were hampered by in- jured players Hairston, one of the teams mainstays on offensive and defen- sive, was out of the game on account of injuries. Caughman, another star, and Fullback .Bidez had to quit the field be- fore the contest was decided Mud also seemed to handicap the Plainsmen. Much of the credit for Vanderbiit’s victory over Auburn and for other victories this sea- son is due to Quarterback Curry, a small man who has shown himself to be one of the hardest southern players to stop, as well as one of the speediest. With Cody, tackle, his work yesterday was reve- lation, especially in running down punts. Little can be said of the Georgia classic the Georgia Georgia Tech contest The Red and Black kept the play most en- tirely in Tech territory and the muddy field led to many fumb,es Tech made only two first downs. while Georgia made eight. The overwhelming victory of George town over the North Carolina Aggies came as a surprise. The Aggies had been showing improved form recently and a close score was expected. The game was marked by rough plays on both sides Virginia, the conqueror of Vanderbilt playing many substitutes, won over South Carolina at Columbia by a small score The Virginians generally had been ex- pected to overwhe’m the South Caro- linians, but apparently the coaches were taking no chances of injuring star play CTS with the North Carolina game facing Virginia on Thanksgiving Day.
