CORNELL BATTLES UPHILL TO VICTORY Washington and Lee in Lead, 81 to z, but Is Beaten by 40 to 81. TWO BARRETTS SHINE ITHACA, Nov. iS.--The Cornell foot hail team faced a real crisis to-day and In tho crucibie OF stern necessity proved It’s real worth. Tho 1thacans beat the strong Washington and Lee team, which had not lost a game for two years. by score OF 40 TO u. ana the all important fact Is that Cornell came back with the score OF Fl to against her In the middle OF the second period. The Cornell team at the start was bit SLOW. and n bit inclined to take the game too easily, and this, combined with two bad fumblea by the crack left halfback Collins in handling punts. gave the visitors big lead. During the time Cornell was UP In the air J. Barrett ran ninety yards for touch down after a kickoff through the whole Cornell team. But there was another Barrett In this game-hls name is Charles--and he happens to lead the Ithaca eleven And Charles didn’t lose his head for a minute. He made Ave OF Cornelrs touchdowns himself. always being tho man on the spot to do the trick and always making the gains when others happened to be faltering And II Chuck Barrett ever played a great game In his life he played II this afternoon. But TO be fair TO the whole team II should he said that after the middle OF the second period every Cornell man played good football and showed that this years team was no fash In tho pan, but that II has the stun to come back. IL was tho first time this year Cornell has been behind In any game and the ithacans therefore met their first real test. The score Of the game is the answer. Washington and Lee scored first on a tumble by Collins a penalty and two | forward passes Cornell came back by rushing the ball from midfeld. Then J. Barrett made his sensational run for a ! touchdown and II few minutes later Col / Inns fumbled on his own Is yard line and penalty and another forward pass gave the visitors another score. Cornell then showed its mettle. Two ! toucthowns were scored before the frst half ended Il to 20 in the visitors favor. Three more touchdowns were made by some splendid runs Shiverick and Muel- Ter helping Barrett. The Cornell leader. however. was always good for big gains, one of them twenty yard run for a ] touchdown In the last period. Cornell was going strong just before the whistle | blew, having the ball on the visitors 15 yard line The lineup: | Cornell. Positions.
