ARMY DEFEAT ONLY SURPRISE ON SATURDAY Colgate Scores Victory Over West Point-Yale Also Victorious PRINCETON’S GOOD TEAM There have been few surprises in the football world this fall but none can COM pare with the upset at West Point Saturday. when Colgate triumphed over the Army team by the score of 13 to 0. Until this game the Cadets showed a football team that promised to be one of the strongest in the East. with many vet Grams In the lineup and good foundation built on open football, the future generals looked like sure winners, but Saturdays upset puts them with Yale, Penn and the Navy. The game demonstrated that a stronger Army is needed on the West Point grid iron. Colgate’s victory was no fiuke for it presented an eleven with a powerful at tack and this attack became stronger when within striking distance of the goal line. The game showed that the Army must develop a stronger defense before the battle with the Navy. Virginia gave Harvard a hard tussle, but failed to show anything startling The Crimson was prepared for a strenuous afternoon and played safe from the start. When within scoring distance Harvard 4 took no chances on rushing the ball, and depended on Captain Mahans toe for the scores. He dropped three across the bar from the field and performed exactly as a Harvard captain should, especially one who follows the famous Brickley. There is no doubt but that Virginia has powerful team, but the strength was shown chiefly on the defense. Their attack was good, but against the Grim son linesmen it could make only little progress Thurman, who scored against Yale on drop kick and whose punting was largely responsible for the victory of the Southerners two weeks ago, could do little against Haughton’s players. Two drop-kicks were attempted. but both went wide of the mark. His punting, however, was good. AS this was the first real test Harward has had this year. three important things were brought out. First, Mahan is one of the best drop-kickers in the East and is a worthy successor of Charles Brickley; secondly, Harvard has a good defense, and thirdly, the generalship on the Harvard team is OF the highest order.
