NAVY’S WORST DEFEAT IN RECENT YEARS Was Administered in Saturdays Football Game by Pittsburgh Team. SCORE AZ TO IL. The Game Had Spectacular Features Few Crumbs Of Consolation Left to NAVY Contigent One of the worst defeats received by the Naval Academy football team in re cent years was that administered by the eleven OF the University OF Pitts ourgh on Saturday, the score being AZ to r. Pittsburgh coached by Glenn | Warner the man who had such notable success with the Carlisle Indians for many years. presented a team with a wonderful system of interference and players who were able tc carry out the tasks allotted to them | The secret of the wonderful game played by the men from western Penn sylvania was that each had part to play. and every man was equal to his task. 1t was old-time football in a large measure-long end runs with a | somewhat loose appealing interfer- ence. but il was so planned and ex- ecuted that every opposing player re- eeiyed attention that generally put the first line of defense out of business at least. and gave the fleet runner a good chance to get away. The game had many spectacular features. Pittsburgh changed its back field frequently, and showed the aud ienee that it mad squad of wonderful calibre in Hastings, Williamson, De Hart and Fry. Hastings was called | upon 10 carry the ball more than any one period. other player, but Fry and Williamson could always be counted upon for substantial gains. De Hart succeeded Williamson at quarter during the second period. but went out later in the game. lie did some brilliant running, including sprint of 80 yar0s for a touchdown which he pulled off in the last quarter, taking the ball from one of the Navy’s kickoffs. De Hart’s great run. how | ever. was not the longest of the game as Right End Martin, of the Navy team fourth classman. intercepted a for ward pass in the second period. and ran 90 yards for a touchdown This revived the spirits of the midshlpmen to some extent, but Pitsburgh’s ability to carry the ball at any time, show ed that the midshipman’s performance was merely a flash i’m the pan Vail was the only midshipman who showed sny ability to carry the ball, making touchdown in the last quarter, the mid shipmen having the advantage of the wind and gaining good many yards on penalties adjudged against the Wis itors. In the same quarter, however Pittsburgh scored three touchdowns, Peck kicking the goal. Hastings ran the ball back for 40 yards after the opening kickoff, and il took but five plays to carry the bali over the Navy goal line. Hastings car | ried the ball in three of these.while Fry and Miller made substantial gains. Miller scored a touchdown in the same quarter. and Fry kicked both goals Martin scored for the Navy and Will hanson for Pittsburgh in the second quarter. Fry kicking the goal and Mil Ter missing for Navy. McLaren cross ed the Navy’s goal line in the third quarter. and Hastings kicked the goal. De Hart. Heron and Hilty were the scorers for Pittsburgh in the final pc riod, the latter recovering the ball on | a blocked kick. Peck kicked one goal in three trials. and Vail missed the Navy’s one try. The great factor in Pittsburgh’s vic | most old-fas hicned football. It’s line men were able to open holes for the runners. and its interference was open but fast and accurate. Each man knew | his duty IN each play, and the ends and | backs were put out of the way time after time, giving the back a splendid opportunity for long run, which was | generally grasped. Straight plays were varied with criss-cross which was not particularly affective. A few forward passes were attempted by both teams, but they were ineffective and the first score against the visitors was due to a pass of this kind inter | cepted by Martin, Navy end. There were not many crumbs of con ISOLATION for the Navy contingent. Vail was about the only Navy player who showed flashes of football ability, and ne did not play during more than hall of the game. The Navy lire was pierc- played by a line which did not appear to be as heavy as the local forwards and the backs were frequently over hauled before they could start The ball was handled very badly IN the hackheld. and the general impression given was that of raw team The lineup: Navy Pittsburgh Jackson Lett End Carlson Clark Left Tackle Thornhill Mills Left Guard Sutherland II. 5. Jones Centre Pech Smith Right Guard Soppiti Gilman Right Tackle Hockensmitl

FINAL COUNT IS Al TO IL Special Dispatch to The Star ANNAPOLIS, Md, October 9-Tne husky midshipmen found themselves powerless to check Pittsburgh’s scoring machine, and as a result they were walloped in the annual foot ball game here today by a count of A to Il. IL was the most severe drubbing that has been administered to the sailor boys since the Army game of twelve years ago, when the rival West Point cadets trounced them to- the tune OF 40 TO .: The middies were hopelessly outplayeo at every angle Of the game. ana tne fact that they were able to register 12 points was due in a large measure to lucky breaks, for at no stage did they show any real dash in offensive work. They Tailed two touchdowns: Martin intercepting Pittsburgh’s at tempted forward pass In the SECOND quarter. and sprinting 80 yards on q clear field Tor the score. Recovers Fumbled Ball. Navy’s second score was hung up In the final quarter. when Williamson fumbled on his 13-yard mark and Navy recovered. Four plunges through the line were successful, Vail finally going over. Pittsburgh sent a good team to An napolis last season and won from inc middies. IL to 6, but the eleven that took the field today was a good 2O-to-l shot compared to the former combinaton. Most of the players are veterans The line is heavy and well balanced and the baek fed sass As ssyie Of play plainly showed the craftiness OF Glenn warner. the veteran coach OF the Carlisle indians. who is filling ms first year as tutor Of the Smoky city pgnaI line on seven occasions, and hve Of the attempts at goal were success full.
