ROMP FOR VIRGINIA In Big Home Game Old Domin- ion Boys Beat Georgia. PLAY IN A DRILLING RAIN Visitors Fail to Get Within Virginia’s 35-Yard Line at ANY Stage-Score, % to o. Special Dispatch to The Star. UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA, October 24.-In the big home game of the season Virginia defeated the University of Georgia, 2S to 0. In spite of the fact that the game was played in a drizzling rain and on a very slippery field. there were few fumbles and the speed Of the Virginia backs played a most important part in the scoring. Georgia never once came within Virginia’s 35yard line, and during the entire game made only six first downs, while Virginia made first down twenty times and gained 35S yards as against 11s gained by Georgia. Virginia started the game with q rush. Barker receiving the kickoff and returning it ten yards. On the next Is yards. from which point Capt. Mayer, by series of plunges. took the ball over for the first score. Barker missed the goal Virginia kicked to n Which and Tas capt Mayer ade the second touchdown. following sew .ral end runs by himself and Gooch. Georgia received again and made hrst caught a forward pass and the quarter ended. Virginia scored the third and fourth touchdowns in the second quarter, the first one resulting from double pass that netted 25 yards. two line plunges by Anderson and. Sparr for IA yards and three end runs by Mayer for 20 yards. The fourth and last touchdown also was made by Mayer. After he received the ball on Georgia’s 35-yard line he took it around right end 13 yards. Spar then gained Z through the line. and on the next play Mayer went around end for the remaining distance. Better in Second Half. great deal in the second half and there was no further scoring until Broyles was tackled behind his line in attempt ing to kick out fotS a safety. In the third quarter Gooch made a beautiful 3O-yard run. Burnett, who had replaced Spar. interfering for him. During this quarter Georgia made three first downs, most OF the gains resulting from end runs by Capt. Paddock and a double pass from Paddock to Hitchcock. The fourth quarter was hard fought and Virginia failed to carry the ball over after getting it within ten yards of the goal three different times. On two occasions penalties probably prevented them from scoring. During this quarter Georgia never got the ball to mid field. For Georgia Capt. Paddock. Thrash and Hitchcock were the most prominent. The short double pass was their most effective play. They did not sue ceed in completingea a single forward pass. For Virginia Gooch, Capt. Mayer and Evans played the most spectacular game. Virginia’s line showed up to be very strong. The score does not in dicate how the visitors were outplayed and it is thought that Virginia is equally as strong as North Carolina on a comparative basis.
