By EDWARD R. BUSHNELL The Carlisle Indians ushered in the 1914 football season on Saturday in their usual vigorous manner when they beat Albright College by the score of 20 to 0. After having had nearly two weeks of cool, bracing weather for their preliminary practice ! they had to endure a hot. sutry after ! noon for their first game conditions which were most unsatisfactory for good football. The Indians score was five ! points less than they made against this Eame team last year, but the Redmen | fumbled away an opportunity for another ! touchdown, When these facts are con- sdered together with the statement that | the visitors had as much weight as the | Indians. We know at least that the Indians | are no weaker than they We’re last year. ! The COMING week will sea the first foot | ball games by all the members Of the | Big Six” All look to have fairly easy ! opponents for the first games, though / Cornell men are living in some trepidation over the outcome OF Saturdays gam with the University Of Pittsburgh. Cor nell will have a warming-up for this contest by PLAYING Ursinus on Wednesday, their only mid-woek game of the 1914 season. Last year Pittsburgh beat Cornell by the score Of 2o-7. this game being the sixth on the Cornell schedule. A year ago Cornell opened with Ursinus and beat the men from College Vile. Pa, by the score of 4l-0, and there is apparently nc reason why Cor nell shouldn’t score a similarly easS victory this year. But the game with Pittsburgh threatens to be a contest OF another character Cornell blames most II Pittsburghs 90 points last year upon the prowess Of eX-Captain Wag- uer a man who was ht for an end posi- tion on any ALA meriCan team. Pitts burgh has just as good a team this year, although Cornell ought TO be even stronger for this initial game than IN 1913 Pittsburgh is still being coached hy Joe Duff, the old Princeton and all American guard, and his friends say he has lost none Of his cunning Like wise Pittsburgh has the advantage OF an early start, and although Cornell has done more preliminary work this year than usual, tho Ithacans will hnd Pittsburgh a tough proposition, II last years score could be taken as = criterion the game between Yale and Maine should be a near championship affair, because the Maine eleven last YEAR had the distinction of holding Yale 10 a 90 tie. But it should be said that Yale played an in and out game last fall and the brand Of football displayed against Maine indicated slump more than unusual strength on Names part, The Els are never Inundated at the hands Of a small college twice in sue cession. and the chances are that they will strive for a decisive victory at least II Is a notable fact that Yale does not open the season this year with Wesleyan, which from time immemorial has been the Ellis initial opponent Blu this year the Mlddletown collegians decided that the Yale game, particularly this early did them more harm than good because they never had a chance to win and had TO endure a good deal of battering just TO AFFORD practice for Yale, Some other small colleges have awakened to this Truth, and all the big universities have had more difficulty this year In sched uling minor colleges Of sufficient strength for the preliminary game. Harvard. Princeton, Dartmouth and PENNSYLVANIA all have what ought to he easy games Harvard plays Bates. a team which the Crimson beat last year rather easily by the score Of Il 10 0. In asmuch as Harvard has a veteran team the chances are that the Crimson can roll up a score OF whatever magnitude II desires. though Bates has been known to make trouble. The Rutgers eleven, which had the hon or ~ drawing first blood on the Prince ton Tigers last year when the score was II TO 3 in Princeton’s favor, plays I’m 1igertown on Saturday. Much OF Rutgers 1918 strength was due 10 the posses sion Of a board Of three coaches, chief OF whom was George Foster Sanford. the
