BADGERS SURPRISED Minnesota Comes to Life and Trims Wisconsin. WCT0RS MAY WIN TITLE Gophers’ Aggressive Attack Too Strong for Opponents Defense. WCTORS MAY WIN TITLE MADISON, Wis. November 1.-Wisconsin’s conference foot ball champion ship was lost this afternoon when Mime sofas eleven inflicted an unexpected one sided defeat on the Badgers, p to 3. The aggressive attack which DR.. Williams taught the Gophers proved too strong for the Wisconsin system of defense. 1t took Minnesota some time to get started. but when the Northerns once got their stride they kept Wisconsin backed up close to the goal Had 1t not been for fumbling the Gophers might have scored at least two more touch downs. The result of the game puts Minnesota In position to contest the conference title with the University of Chicago In their contest at Minneapolis Novem- Der Is. The game was one of the fiercest ever played in Madison and substitutes and injuries were numerous. Tollefsen. quarterback for Minnesota, was the most seriously hurt. He was struck over the eye and knocked unconscious, but ultimately recovered, and it was thought tonight that he will experience no lasting ill effects from his hurt. Up to the time he was taken out he had shown excel lent generalship, but did not handle the bail so cleanly as his successor, Lawlor. Eumbling, which marred the first period of play. was practically done away with after Lawlor took charge. Wisconsin took the lead early in the game when Bellows scored Ball with q drop kick. For the rest of the first half the Cardinals attack was well directed and only the good punting of Shaughnessy prevented further scores. Evidently Dr. Williams during the intermiSsiOn told his men where the Wisconsin weak points were to be found, for in the second half the conditions were exactly reversed. Al though Minnesota’s famous shift was stopped at times, yet in the main 1t was successful. Both teams showed considerable polish In their attack and about equal ragged work on defense. The Minnesota men, however, possessed more fighting spirit and used 1t to good advantage. In the third quarter a tumble by Wis consin gave Minnesota the ball on the Badger 7-yard line. Attempts at Wisconsins tackles and center failed. but Nc. Almon turned Lange’s end for the frs Minnesota touchdown and Lawlor kicked goal. Minnesota, Z; Wisconsin, 3. In the fourth period an attempted fake kick resulted In tumble behind Wiscon sins line and Scion fell on the ball for q touchdown and kicked goal. Score: Min nesota, IA; Wisconsin, 3. McAlmon ran the kickoff back As yard. TO W;sconsin’s 4O-yard line. On the third play Shaughnessy ran around right tackl. 40 yards for a touchdown. Scion kicked goal. Score: Minnesota, 81; Wisconsin, 3.

MINNESOTA BEATS WISCONSIN 21–3 Badgers Lose Championship Aspirations Under One Sided Defeat. MADISON, Wis, Nov. 3.-Wiscongiven it’s fnal burial here Saturday, eleven scrappy fighters from Mime sofa performing at the funeral. The gophers started slow, but warmed up and completely outclassed the badgers at the finish, winning going away by the decisive score of II to g. More than $4,000 fans were present 1t was not the sort of a champion ship game that these enemies OF long standing generally play. Fumbles, carelessness in the line and poor in reference early made it an individual encounter between such clever men as Shaughnessy, McAImon, Mattern and LaWler for the victors and host of back field men carrying the cardinal. Wisconsin played miserably and went to pieces in the second half. Mattern is Never Stopped. Mattern was the tower of strength exhibited by Coach Williams eleven. He was never stopped, not even hest tated, and when he was relieved toward the finish of the game Mime sofa rooters expressed their gratifi cation Tor mis- work by reception such as few heroes are accorded. Nc Almon played star game. He made the first touchdown for his team and afterward gained yard after yard by almost superhuman effort. Shaughmessy was great as a kicker. but he was late leaping into fame, the game being almost over before he dashed fifty yards for the last touchdown. 1t has been a long time since Wis consin has put UP such a weak show ing against a we’ll matched rival. Cap tain Tandberg was disappointment. Rated the best full back in the west, he never once earned that name. He was forgetful and slow thinker and it was his untimely tumble that gave Scion a chance to register.

MINNESOTA, ri; WISCONSIN, 8 Cardinal CoIors Are Traiied in Defeat in Contest with Gopher Team at Madison. Madison.-Beaten, bumped and bat tered, Capt Tandberg led his former champion Wisconsin football team off Camp Randall at the short end of a Fl to score after the annual contest with the University of Minnesota. The Wisconsin team was clearly out classed. Three touchdowns, one scored in the third and two in the fourth quarter, left Wisconsin hopelessly in the ruck, beaten team. Up to the first touchdown the Badgers had fought bravely, with all the apparent advantage on their side. In the last two periods bad breaks, coupled with persistent hammering by the visiting backs, turned what looked like a GER tain victory into a rout, Minnesota making big gains almost at will. Wis consin scored it’s three points through q drop kick for goal by Bellows in the first quarter. Between 10000 and $4,000 people, probably the largest in the history Of Wisconsin football, witnessed the game.
