FOOTBALL BATTLE BETWEEN COLLEGE TEAMS PROVES EXCITING CONTEST. RESULT IS UNSATISFACTORY PumpeIIy Was the Hero of the Yale Team, Saving Them From Defeat By Kicking a Goal From the Fifty Yard Line. Princeton, N. J., Nov. 16.-Prince- ton and Yale, in their annual foot ball battle on University field today ? ayed each other to a 6–6 tie. So evenly were the teams matched that neither had the power to rush the ball to touchdown Each team put up stonewall defense, and all lhe scoring was done on goals from the field and a goal from placement. The result of the struggle was un- satisfactory to both ssdes and espec- ially to the thousands of P-incetoa rooters who saw the game slip from the hands of the fighting Tigers in the last few minutes of play. The hero of the game in the eyes of Yale was Pumpelly, who, coming into the game for the second time when everybody expected to hear the timekeeper’s whistle blow giving Princeton a victory booted the ball tor a field goal from the fifty yard fine, tieing the score. It was one of the most remarkable goals from the field, ever seen on the Princeton gridiron No enc expected Ya.e would try for such a score with the ball in mid-held The time was shorl and it was case of doing something heroic or lose. Yale took the chance and won. Giving signal apparently for 8 punt. Pumpelly, wbo had but d few minutes before taken Markley’s place at right half. dropped back and re ceived a perfect pass from Ketcham Hardly any one expected to see the ball soar to the goal post. But fl quickly began to rise, and on dead straight line toward the goal. Stew l Baker. the little Princeton quarter back ran back and held his hands up ready to catch the ball but the moro he backed the nearer he got to the goal line and finally he backed over the whitewash mark just as the ball sailed between the posts. As the ball cleared the bar Ref cree Neal Snow of Michigan. threw up his hands, indicating that score had been made and the thousands of Yale rooters, realizing that the daring back had tied the score, sent up tremendous cheer The Yale substitutes turned somersets on the side lines and Pumpelly was almost carried to his position by his fellow players For Princeton, the hero of the game was Hobart Baker, who made both of the black and oranges fled goals Both were easy chances and came in the second period. Flynn, the tall fullback of the Yale team, was the first man to make a score. In the first period he kicked goal from placement from within the 25 yard line. Princeton surpris-
