CHICAGO EXPERT PRAISES BADGERS AXELSON SAYS WISCONSIN is GOOD. , BUT THE GOPHERS HAVE A CHANCE, Chicago, Nov. 5.-After several years of trying the University of Wisconsin seems to have gathered together an old-fashioned football team, says G. w. AXe1son. The eleven which defeated the MaroonS Saturday certainly made and even if the badgers should not win the conference championship they will die with their boots on. That is a certainty. without detracting in the slightest from it’s brilliant showing the 80 to II score was not so much due to the Cardinals prowess as to the Maroons’ weakness. Chicago was weak, lament bly, so, but there is no need for dis couragements on the midway. Fate has seemingly decreed that the Ma rooms must at least play one ragged game each season and now with this one out of their system, better things may be looked for. Chicago Worked Hard. Chicago showed that it had good workmen in its lineup but that was all. They labored hard but only individual 1y and the work was all dom with feet and hands. AT no time did brain work enter into the argument. The showing of some was brilliant so far as physical eXertions were concerned, but nothing more. AS for team work, interference. tackling and all the other fine points of the game, they were an absent quantity. t.. In direct contrast to this was the work of the victors. They seldom made a slip and were on the job every minute. There has seldom been a team on the western gridiron which has shown more ~ferceness in attack, more alertness in following the ball, harder tackltng and better interference for their Still, after all the good points shown 1t is hard to come to the conclusion that Wisconsin has a certainty on the | nn1fprannn oh o. M rfnpGhi ..# II 49,, rESII meet Minnesota and the gophers are surely coming. The M~innesotans play ed a more or less disappointing game with Illinois, getting the verdict by a far smaller score than expected, but re- | ports from the northland indicate tina ! Coach Williams has a team of tremendous possibilities Int much may hap pen In the next two weeks before the badgers and gophers clash. Also, IL can also be reasonably expected that Chicago is likely to improve some SO per cent and it may be a repetition of last year. .... .. Strong I’m Sports. Coach Williams at Minnesota has confessed that he has the best material in years and all that’s needed is practice. He seems to be getting 1t as the teams which have ~journeyed to Min neapolis this year have been playing in top form. A heavier and more aggressi’ve set of linemen against the badgers will undoubtedly change the method of attack used by the Cardinals Saturday. Chicago was only strong in spots and these were few n far between. Even at that Chicago made some gall ant stands and held the badgers for downs a number of times. Des Jardfen’s work at center was above the average, but the guards on either side did not offer the opposition expected. Even with Van Ripper out of the line up, WISCONSIN presented a brilliant considerably on the good work done by the badger linemen and ends. Coach Juneau had worked up a well nigh perfect interference for Gillette, who game. Gillette, Tandberg, Bright and Tormey will gain against any team, but not with the frequency with which they. crossed the chalk lines against Chicago. Butler and Samp are also likely to hold their own against mosl any lineman and Hoeffel and Oftsie will be heard from in the closing games. Badgers Looked Good. There are not a few at Madison who without hesitance, picked wisconsin as western champions, but its actual form displayed could hardly warrant such an assumption. The badgers, as has game, both on offense and defense, but 1t was a uniform strength by contrast only. There are two points in their favor, low running and hard tackling. CHc Is tDouHu 10 gam STOuHu against any team while the other will shorten the distances OF their opponents. 1t usually took FIVE or six Maroons to stop one Cardinal, but it never required more than n badger to bring his opponent to earth. Reports from Minneapolis are to the effect that the gophers played desperately to beat Illinois 13 to 0. AS on other western gridirons open plays were resorted to frequently and this has enIivened a game, which at the start of the season, did not look promissing from the viewpoint of the spec tators. In this connection it was point ed out that had Chicago relied more on forward passes and kicking the result might have been different or at least the score might have been closer. There was no question about wisconsin be- Il In % anfiA1ad. “a min
