SOUTH DAKOTA ALMOST WINNER NERMILLION ELENEN HOLDS MICHIGAN TEAM DOWN TO Z TO & SCORE IN SATUR- DAYS GAME. feffy REID, Ann AfDOf, Mich South Dakota came within an ace of beating Michigan all hollow Sat urday afternoon. For three fourths of the game the husky westerners outplayed our men and only the speed of Jimmy Craig and a little bad break in the luck prevented the Coy attes leaving with the Wolverine pelts. Coyotes Score First. South Dakota was the first ia score and for about two hours it looked very much as though it would have a monopoly of the scoring business. Two long forward passes early in the second quarter, the last a beauty from Colfey to Sheeks put the Coyotes on the ten yard line with a clear field and Sheeks made the most of it. Unfortunately for him, however, he was forced over in the far southwestern orner OF the lot and this gave Jimmie Craig d chance to use his speed TIC spoil the punt out. South Dakota was unable to try for goal, but their six points looked as big as the Black Hills for the rest of the afternoon. The fight and dash displayed by the western line kept Michigan on the defense nearly the entire time until late in the last quarter. nee an unlucky tumble after a double pass on the Kickoff had enabled South Dakota to reach Mich igan’s Is yard line OH the very first play, prevented the westerners from :. a n,Jir q oyntJa. rA~rta1,dnyrp fC,. +Ib trick completely surprised the Mich igan team. Michigan Rallies. On another occasion Ferguson tried Il drop kick from the forty yard last quarter Michigan seemed to rally and fought South Dakota down TO the Is yard line only to lose it on downs. Ferguson tried to punt aga inst the wind but Jimmy Craig broke through so fast that the South Dakota back had to hurry and kicked high and outside two yards in adj vance of the scrimmage line. From there Michigan battered over for the tying touchdown which patterson converted into an easy goal, winning one of the hardest fought games ever played ON Ferry Field, by a score OF I to s. The work of Sheeks, Inlay. Coffey and Meter stood out above that OF the rest of the South Dakota team, though the whole western line fought like demons. Until the very finish Michigan vas forced to resort TO fakes in order to gain. South Dakota played a fast tricky game and has nothing to be ashamed of i nthe de feat. Her ends outplayed Michigan and her use of the forward passes made Michigan rooters shake in their shoes. For the Wolverine cast Thompson and Jimmy Craig We’re the whole works. T~hompson’s punting was at one stage of the game the only thing that kept Michigan in the game. The game was played OIL a soggy slippery field that spoiled more than one play for both teams. A snow storm chased the crowd of ten thousand home as the game ended With the final score, Michigan, Z; South Dakota, 6.
