SEWANEE DEFEATS TENNESSEE B ID 3 IN RAGGED CONTEST Tigers Show Strong Line. All Points Scored in First Half Chattanooga, October 26.-(Special)- Dutplaying their opponents at every stage md in every department of the game. lhe Sewanee Tigers humbled the Ten hessee Vols here this afternoon by the score of 39 to 6. Both teams, however, played ragged and rratic ball. Tennessee’s only marker ,ame as the result of a tumble by Toley. while three of Sewanees counters were tlso scored after similar pebbles. The irowd was the largest in the history of 11e local grldiron. The one feature of the fray was the ane. Although weakened by the loss of Dalton, the Virginia Military Institute Har, the Purple forwards literally tore the Orange and White line into shreds. Haywood especially smashed the Tennes- tee plays in practically every instance, while the ball was still behind the line tf scrimmage. The weather was too warm for foot ball and visbly affected the players. Time was called repeatedly, Gillem and gonde being slightly groggy at several pSrlouS. MdsWpodt 1llleiil anu oileiuuH proved the most formidable individuals bf the Tiger machine. Cameron Carroll And Fonde bore the brlnt for Tennes- pee. Gilem’s bunting was up to the hsual high standard. All of the scores were made in the nrst half, neither team exerting itself in the last two quarters, Sewanee appar- bntly as matter of precaution and Ten hessee through despair. The first Tiger touchdown came in six minutes. A forward pass, Gillem to Shel- aon. placed the ball on Tennessees two yard lire, after two first downs had been made on consistent gains. Parker car Tied the ball oyer on the first try, but funbled. Ham, however. recovered for the marker Tolley kicked goal. In the second quarter came the four additional markers In rapid succession. The first came when Moore recovered Eonde’s tumble on an attempted forward pass and ran 57 yards. The second was the result of Gillespie’s blocking an at tempted kick by Fonde. McCallum re- covered the ball and raced 30 yards. The third was again the result of blocked punt On the kickoff McClan- nahan drove the ball clear over the goal line. Tennessee put the ball in play by scrimmage. Gillespie blocked another punt and Dobbins fell on the ball on Tennesee’s two yard line Parker took it over on the first try. Tolley missed goal. The final marker came in two minutes after. Sheldon went around left end for 5s yards Tennessee’s only marker oc eurred when Geisley recovered a fumbled punt of Tolley’s and ran B yards
