NAVY SMARTS UNDER DEFEAT BY LEH|GH Pennsylvanians Completely Out played Middies on Saturday. SwARTHMORE NEXT ON CARD. Team That Humbled University Of Penn. VIII Give Sailor Lads Another Hard Battle. nara DdItie. Playing a game that could hardly be called an improvement over the disappointing showing against Johns Hopkins on the previous Saturday, despite the fact that practically all of the regulars were in the line at one tine or another, the midship~ mens S football team went up against the eleven of Lthigh University Saturday afternoon, and this week they will smart on the sting of a clear cut defeat administered by the visitors TO the tune of Ia to G. 1t was a game doggedly fought from beginning to end and Lehigh won very deservedly. The most ar dent Navy supports made no attempt to shatter the glory of the victory. And, another surprise of Saturdays gridiron battles was Swarthmore’s de. feat of University of Pennsylvania by to 8. The result of that game will make the middies sit up and take notice, as Swarthmore is on the Navy schedule for the coming Saturday. Swartmore has fast as we’ll as experienced team, and to save them selves from a second defeat this seaon, the mIddies must show decided improvement in this weeks workout. The defeat by Lehigh is the first sustained by Navy team in three years. The visitors were in fine trim for the struggle, despite their over whelming defeat by Princeton a week ago, though hopes of triumph Saturday were not at all strong. Scoring touchdown in the first two min utes as the result Of a spectacular run by Pazetti, their quarterback, who, by the way, played brilliantly throughout, and then kicking the resutant goal, served as a big boost, and after that they had the middies almost completely at their mercy. From start to finish they played like tigers, hammecing away at tn mid dies heavy forwards for substantial gains, and in the pinches they called the forward pass into play, and with this they had splendid success. 1t was this play that resulted in the sec ond touchdown in the opening period of the last half of the game. The visitors tried the forward pass about dozen times and in half that num- Der they succeeded for gains ranging from five to fifteen yards. On two occasions a double pass terminated in a forward toss that caught the middies entirely off their guard. 1t as on these two plays that they netted their longest gains. T.ehigh displayed far superior team work than their opponents, had excelleht interference for the man carrying the ball and handled punts and ran them back in almost fault less style. in this respect Pazetti shone as the bright star Lehigh’s attack was more aggressive and they got their plays off with greater steam than did the middies The middies were probably a bit heavier than the visitors but the defense of Lehigh was there with the goods all the time. They repeatedly forced the Sailors to fall back on punting as may be in dicated by the fact that the number of first downs gained averaged two to the Middies’ one. And they counted for ahout twice the distance. The Bethlehem lads kept the middies on the defensive during most of the game and although the first half closed with the score standing z to o in their favor it was felt by Navy supporters that che Sailors would GER tainly come back strong. But the expected rally did not materialize. On the contrary the superiority Of the visitors playing was greater than in the opening sessions. The play that electrified the spectators occurred almost Immediately after Lehigh opened the game by kicking off to Navy. The middies fail ed to gain on their first attempts and Alexander punted Pazetti the dash ing quarter received the kick in fac style on the 30-yard line and after eluding three tacklers, by clever dodging and squirming, practically all of his teammates got into the interference and he lodged his way through the broken field of players for a 40 yard run and touchdown. NJ ACaSl AOAA NdNg LdCkl6S 0dQ their hands on the feetfooted quarter back, but they failed to brilg him to earth. The second touchdown was the resul. Of beautiful forward pass in che third period. Both teams had had possession of the ball on a couple of occasions and each was forced to kick. Leonard, of Navy, fumbled Pazetti’s punt, and Lehigh recovered the leather twelve yards away from Navy’s goal. Two line plays failed to net mucn of a gain, and chen bv a forward pass between Pazetti and Sawtelle the latter went across the goal line for a touchdown. Hoban kicked goal. The visiting backfield was heavy and fast one and time and again the backs especially Hoban aid Crichton plowed through the Sailors line for substantial gains. On one occasion they carried the ball forty yards in this manner before beiAg stopped. The whole Lehigh outfit seemed primed for the struggle and thav

But if Penn had scored that touchdown the game in all probability would have been played very diff ferently in the second half.
