Prediction That Better Teams Would Win This Year Seems Good CARLISLE GETS A SURPRISE IN w. & j. Rube Boville, Former Central Captain, Is Half on w. & j. The prediction that victories on the gridiron would be more decisive this year under the new rules, which give moro scientific chance to score, are coming true. Saturdays games. the first In which the west participated generally. gave results that were unmistakeable. Among the big universities there were only two tie games. Northwest. ern and Lake Forest. two Chicago schools. played to nothing to moth Ing score, as did Carlisle and Wash. ington and Jefferson. Az q general thing there was little doubt after yesterdays games as to which teams we’re the superiors. Of course. Il IL yet early In the season and most OF the contests were mere practice jousts. but thcre was never theless that feeling OF decision IN most OF the scores. Michigan rather surprised its sup porters by running up 81 points against Case while holding the Scien. lists scoroless. especially when Yost took advantage OF the Caao weakness to- use multitude OF substitute players, The u, OF d, showed the GLASS that Coach Campbell is putting into Il when Il went down 10 Tifiin and defeatod the strong Heidelberg eleven on Its own grounds. The game was fairly contested. but the superiority OF the Detroiters was never In doubt. Bay City complained that they were In no condition to face Central and they certainly demonstrated that when they allowed Stockings mon 70 roll up es points against them and never scored themselves, Eastern met tartar In Pontiac and were able 10 win by only q singls touchdown, the only score OF the game. d. U. s. found Assumption far too strong and lost 3S to o. Out in the state the real game OK the day was the NJ A. C.-Alma game Alma was sorely disappointed to lose this contest. They have the best team in years at the Presbyterian col lege and thought that this was their year TO humber NJ A. G. They man aged 10 score by the field goal route but had two touchdowns and TIVE goals following these, score on them. The biggest university score of the day was that run by the University of Cincinnati against Transylvania. 124 to 0. Vanderbilt. Dan McGuigan’s team, took an even 100 from Marys. vile. Marysville scored on Wander bilt, though. getting a field goal si,iswegon high scored $50 against Ferris institutes 9. Michigan’s future opponents in the east faired rather badly with the ex. ception OF Pennsy. Penn romped over Dickinson, 16 to 0. But Cornell played pepless game and let Overlin walk all over them, losing 13 to o. SYRIA cuse lost to Yale. 81 to o. These scores are not indicative that Michigan will have chance to meet the best of the eastern teams this year and makes IL certain that Penn will see the big game of the year again. One OF the surprises of the day was the 90 score Of the Carlisle-W. & J. game. Carlisle was doped to beat w. & ]. easily. II is interesting to note that Rube Boville, former Cen. trsl high captain and end, plays half for w. & J. couple OF small towns In Michigan copped from the large schools. Saturday. too Plainwell won from halamaZoo, IA To o, and Mason from Battle Creek. to O. The open style of football, the for ward pass, was used principally to open mp the close defense assumed TO check the old style OF play. The pos sibilities of the forward pass this year make 1t more easy to gain ground by the old army game than before, as the ever-present DANCE, that pass will be used, pulls strength away from the defense. The principal defect with the two Michigan stars. Thomson and Craig. was fumbling. They gained ground all right when called upon but fumbled too many times. Thomson is a man who is likely to tumble when tackled. This Is one point that Yost has emphasized for his benefit There was considerable dismay M Central when II was learned tha, Capt Patterson would be out of the game for several weeks on account of breaking an ankle bone Saturday Patterson is one of the mainstays Of the team.

Oct. 5.-The game today between the Carlisle Indians and Washington and Jefferson College resuited in a tie, o to 0, after one of the fiercest struggles the husky Indians have ever been in. The Washington and Jefferson boys developed some of the finest football ever seen on the Tocal field. and with the exception of the third period the Indians never had a chance to cross the Washington and Jefferson line.
