GOPHERS BEAT IOWA “a TO 6 Minneapolis. oct. 0.--Minnesota’s 1911 team encountered the flrst trick onense of the season when Iowa opered UP on Northrop field Saturday art ernoon. Although puzzled for a time by the tactics OF the hawkeyes. the gophers kept their goal line Bnviolate so far as a touchdown was concerned and won the game by a score OF 24–6. Iowa scored twice by the air line. once without question in a beautiful exhibition Of drop kicking by o’Brien and the other effort. while appearing to be wide Of the posts, was declared goal by the referee. In some respects the game was a repetition OF the battle with Nebraska. In the early period Minnesota encountered the famous Dartmouth split plays and the Iowans kept their rivals busy guessing for a time. Iowa utihSed the forward pass. direct pass quarterback run and half dozen 9TH er plays from the split formations but these were so closely foowed by Min nesota that ii Was impossible for the hawkeyss to get man loose. Finally the gophers solved the plays and stopped them very satisfactorily. Iowa’s team was not the weakling 1t had been reported. The line was a heavy, fast charging one, and repeat eddy throughout the game sifted through the Minnesota forwards or got the jump on them. The Iowa baclSfield did not seem to possess men with sufticient speed to make the coach’s ideas effective but the field was slippery through rain and frost and this may have hampered Iowa speed as II did Minnesota’s. The backs were light and the whole team fought with splendid spirit but seemed to lack the decision and power necessary TO make the formations go with consistency. O’Brien gave one OF the greatest exhfbitions Of punting and drop kicking seen on Northrup field in many a day. Coupled with O’Briens good kicking, Iowa seemed to outluck the gophers In the pinches, but the whole game with its uncertainty at times afforded Minnesota q splendid training for the Chicago contest OF next Saturday. The game was free from unnecessary roughness Minnesota after a time tired of line plunglng and dispersed the Iowa de- Tense by the utilization OF the forward pass. Five passes were made in all, three Of them resulting in playing a heavy contributary part in touchdowns. One touchdown came directly as a resuit of successful pass The gopher use Of passes in the Nebraska contest cinched that struggle and so democrat lied Iowa’s defense as to make line gains more possible through driving back the secondary defense.
