FOOTBALL COACHES kept THE SECRETS The Big Eight Teams Got Through First Games Without Disaster Chicago, ILL.,, Oct. 11-Football coaches of the east and west are still in possession Of their pet 1911 secrets. Last Saturdays grist of games in the two sections failed to reveal the mystertes planned for the major contests Of the season. The championship contenders struck easy opponents in the majority of cases and where close competition developed the leading teams preferred coming off with small totals to showing their gridiron hands. The elimination of Indiana by Chi Cages % to 6 boom at Marshall field n Wabash’s 8 to 0 score against Purdue were the chief happenings in he big eight” region from a cham pionship standpoint. Chicago. Wis consin and Illinois and Minnesota remanned in the running without embar. assing their future chances and the large eastern elevens came through the mill with no important upsets. Maroon Stock Scars The Chicago-Indiana game gave ma room stock a distinct lift and cleared UP a part of the shadows that have hung owe Marshall field since the beginning of the practice season. AL though the maroons displayed some wretched tackling and a varied assortment Of fumbles they got together for an excellent brand of early team work and followed the ball with much skill. The success of the team as. a scoring machine and the cooperation of the new back field were pleasant surprises to Coach’s Stages camp. Captain Rademacher and Carpenter, the maroon tackles, did valiant ser vice at every stage of the game, star ring particularly in blocking two of Captain Gill’s kicks at critical stages Of the game. Scruby’s two drop kicks indicated that Coach Stage will have a sure and steady point winner If the new boot artist can keep up to his early standard. Minnesota’s 5 to 0 score against South Dakota shows that the gophers have not. developed as fast as they did last year. but one Of the western fans will accept the count as indicating a serious weakness on the part of Min nesota. Coach Williams has enough material to construct a powerful eleven inc is not expected to turn out easy time piling up %thirty-one points against Millikin and Wisconsin totaled Is to 0 against Lawrence without haNing to tricks. Good Start For Purple Northwestern started auspiciously with its Is to- 0 score against Mon mouth and should figure in the big eight season with more success than last year. Michigan’s score of “a to 0 against Case was handily won and the wolverines are not worrying over the future. The – to 0 victory of Yale over Syracuse was another easy feat and Harvard was able to beat Holy Cross 8 to 0 without giving away secrets. Princeton. Cornell. Pennsylvania and the other big eastern teams came out of their games ~unscratched although Pennsylvania’s small score against Ursinus did not please the rooters. Coach Stage has started preparations for Purdue at Marshall field with the Illinois game of October 81 in mind. He predicts that Purdue will furnish enough opposition to make the next Maroon game exciting. Although the Northwestern rooters look upon the Monmouth game as the old vetern did on the battle Of Blenhelm, “a famous victory” Coach HAM NETT does not regard it in the same favorable light. Although it vas a big ger score h Northwestern has Sc cured in years. Coach Hammett says Monmouth was not SO strong as was expected and hat in reality the purpies play much Of the time was below par.
