BATTLE TO A T|E| Pennsylvania and Michigan in ScoreIess Contest. WOLVERINES DO BEST WORK Western Lads Had Ball Down to Quakers’ Eight Yard Line, But Couldn’t Get Over. PHILADELPHIA, November IL. - Whether Pennsylvania or Michigan has the better foot ball team will not be known for at least another year, as these two elevens, each q leader In its section, fought a scoreless battle on Franklin Field here this afternoon before about $4,000 persons. 1t was hard contest, sharply and cleanly played, and while there was no score made, both teams left the field with honors. If there was any advantage in the game it was with Michigan, which several times clearly outplayed Pennsylvania. but was unable to push the Quakers over the goal line. Once during the stiff battle in the third period It looked as If nothing could stop the big western team from scoring a touchdown, but Pennsylvania, driven back to her s-yard line. showed the fighting qualities that are in the eleven and held the powerful Michigan men. Twice the Wolverines crashed into the Pennsylvania’s line yards from the goal and each time the Michigan attack crumbled against the stonewall defense OF the desperate Pennsylvanians. This was Michigan’s only real opportunity to score, and the thousands Of Pennsylvania supporters wildly cheered as the ball was given to Pennsylvania on downs and was immediately kicked out Of danger , Pennsylvania also had one good opportunity to score. 1t came In the second period. After getting the ball on downs Pennsylvania worked 1t to within striking distance. and Thayer was brought into the game to drop a goal. The kick was blocked. and Pennsylvania lost its best chance of the game to score. The Michigan team was much heavier than Pennsylvania, and at times the big west ern men almost toyed with the light eastern players. but when 1t came to critical moments Pennsylvania was there with the courage and the ability to- stop the onslaught. The giant Benbrooke and Cornwall made great holes In the Penn sylvania line, through which Magidsohn and Thompson we’re shot for and 1O yard gains. The forward pass did not figure to any great advantage in the game; in fact, it failed oftener than it succeeded. Michigan worked several fake plays on Pennsylvania, which succeeded for 5 and 10 yard gains. but Pennsylvania quickly learned the false moves, and In the last half of the game broke them up repeatedly. Marks. Cozens and Scott played fine foot ball for Pennsylvania, SCOTS kicking gaining more ground than Thompson’s punting did for AIichigan. Sommer, Pennsylvania back. was sent out Of the game for roughness and was replaced by Kennedy. Otherwise the game was .cleanly played. the officials being called upon to infiict only very few penalties. The lineup:
