M|DD|ES SMOTHER DAVIDSON COLLEGE Navy Plays Many Substitutes That They May Earn College Letter. Special Dispatch to The Star. ANNAPOLIS Md. November 20.-The Army game being Cancelled by the west Pointers. and all efforts of the authorities here to secure another contest TO take its place being in vain. Navy closed the season at Annapolis today by wal Looping the somewhat lighter team or Davidson College by a score of 40 to =. The struggle, which for the first rev minutes of play, during which the llght visitors Tailed one touchdown and goal, promised to be more interesting than II afterward developed, was witnessed by good crowd. It was marked by the presence in the lineup Of Capt. Tub by Meyer and Quarterback Mason, who have both played against hard luck, SUI fered many injuries. and got into little real struggle during the season. Mason has as a matter of fact, played not single game until this afternoon. He stayed in for only about three minutes Of play. and was replaced by Erwin, whose costly tumble allowed the South erners to tally their only touchdown. The visitors tally came shortly after play began, and when Navy had scored the initial figure with surprising ease On an exchange of kicks Erwin juggled one of Booe’s punts, and the unclaimed leather was quickly covered by Peden for the visitors on the 5-yard line. the Sailors could not get together, and after one short gain Pharr was showed through the Blue and Gold line for touchdown, 10 which Booze added the one point from a goal. Navy kept hammering after this. and taking a brace, rolled up % points before the initial period ended. Their beef told. as they outweighed their visitors. and had the first team been kept in harness the final figures would have made The Southerners ashamed to go home. AS it was the final chance, however, many of the lads who have worked hard in the Blue and Gold uniforms for the whole season. were given their opportunity to win their spurs in the shape of the coveted golden M monograms, and many substitutiOns were made. Capt. Meyer, who has been out OF the games ever since the early part of the season, started the struggle. and. staying in for two and half minutes, was responsible for the initial score of the game. He did yeoman service, however. In this short time. following the kickoff by Dawilson and Dalton’s quick return punt, the SouthernerS attempted to kick the leather out of danger, but the husky. though lame. chieftan of the Admirals broke through, recovered tumble on the 2-yard line, and then opened a hole for Bully Richardson to fomp through and tally. When the tally had been run up to a safe point, aud there was little danger of the visitors recovering from the CRU cling they had suffered. the coaches began to send in the men who have shape. even though they did not earn jobs on the varsity lineup. Substitution after substitution was made, and alto gether thirty-two Represented the Sailors on the barred fie... before the final time was called. The contest was one which. before the first half was over. was settled as to the victor, and resolved itself into a battle for the number of points the Admirals could run UP. The Navy was much The heavier, and their plays were either straight line plunging by the weighty back or safely executed end and tackle plays behind a strongly protect ing line. There were one or two neatly executed forward passes by the Sailors and several good open runs for features. One of the forward passes, from Erwin to Cummings Carey. the speedy Mary lander. who has been playing end. was literal peach” Carey also distinguish ed himself by getting away for 45-yard sprint to a touchdown, after recovering a tumble by the visitors. Erwin also starred with his quarterback runs for gains Of from 10 to 40 yards. The lineup: Navy. Position. Davidson Hamilton. Fem Left end ......... Peden King. Zenor Hall. Left tackle ............
