MISTAKE BEAT NAVY. Referees Wrong Decision Al Io1ced Virginia Team to Score. Annapolis, Oct. 24-Gresham Poe, ref cree of the Virginia game yesterday has adj mitted that he made a wrong decision. After Staunton had run the ball to the Navy 2-yard line, the midshipmen held for three downs, but he gave first down to the WIS., itors because the midshipmen asked for time to be taken out for the fourth time. This. he held, was a foul under Section 4 of Rule 26. and punishable by the giving of a first down to the other side. AS matter of fact, the point is covered by Section OF Rule 10. which says that the penalty is the loss of two yards. the downs and possession of the ball remaining the same. The defeat Of the Navy at the hands of Virginia seems TO have crystallized a lot of criticism of the coaching. The feel ing among some old Navy football men here is that good material is going to waste because the men are being held to old fashioned football, and being sent, with an incomplete equipment. to do battle with elevens fully trained in the most modern football. The trouble is we are behind the times” said one old Navy man to-day. What we want is a man who can teach the team 1909 football. and not the game of 1906 or 1907. We can play the old game all right What we want to learn is the new one That is why there has been so much dis satisfaction over the appointment of Jack Gates, the old Yale man, as head field coach. He and Howard. who is helping him. know the old game from A to 2, but they don’t seem willing or able to teach the new style Of play. ‘‘The material here is the best and brawniest that has been available for many years However, despite all the troubles and the bad start, the team is going to give the Army the fight of it’s life. Prince ton will probably win without much diff Guilty on Saturday. but after that the team will develop and improve lot. if am not mistaken”
