TIGERS COME TO LIFE BEAT SEWANEE EASILY. Read Runs Sirty-tUe Yards for One Princeton Touchdown. IBy Telegraph to The Tribunel Princeton. ~. j. Oct. 16.-Favored by ideal foot ball weather and encouraged by the return of Hart Read and WEIGH to the game. the Princeton Tigers awOke this afternoon and had no difficulty in defeating Sewanee University, Of the South by a score of 20 TO 0. The Southern team was expected 10 give Princeton a hard test but although fast the forwards were much too light to hold their own against the heavy Princeton line, and Hart and Read tore through for big gains Princeton presented a lineup which contained first string back field. and the result was marked Improvement in the work of the team While the game can hardly be taken as a criterion of the strength of the Princeton team yet the eleven played with more dash and life than in the earlier games. and the attack powerful. The tackling still weak, and when one of the Sewanee backs did get away il was always for a long run as the Princeton players seemed incapable of bringing him down. Princeton received the kickoff in the first half and Immediately took advantage of the wind by playing punting game This proved TO be a wise move, for the sewanee backs could not gain against their heavy opponents, and were forced steadily backward every exchange of punts After about ten minutes OF play Princeton took the ball on Sewanees 3O-yard line, from which Read soon carried it over for touchdown after several good gains by Hart through the line. Princeton then kicked off and on the next NAV Myers. the Sewanee halfback. startled the Prince ton supporters by a pretty dashing run Of forty yards around the end. On the next two plays however, the SoutheTners lost five yards and were forced TO punt Then the Tigers began the same tactics employed -before of slowly forcing the Sc vance team back. After a series of gains by Read and Hart and several exchanges Of punts the IT. gers secured the ball more on their opponents 3O-yard line, from where II was carried steadily forward 10 the 5-yard mark, where the ball was lost onside kick. Noise then fell back 10 punt, but the ball was passed over his head and McCrohan broke through and tackled him before he could get off his punt, thus scoring two more points for Princeton on a safety In the second half Read made. the most sensauonal play Of the day by breaking through the Sewanee line on a fake kick formation and running siXty-five yards for touchdown After the next kickoff several substitutes went in for Princeton but il made little apparent difference in the play and Dawson pushed over for the third touch down soon afterward. Waller kicked all three goals. In the last few minutes Of play, with the ball on Sewanees 30-yard line, Cunningham was substituted for Dawson and tried a drop kick, which he missed by few inches, the wind swerving the ba II from its course. Bergen, who substituted for Christie at quarter back in the second half, filled this important position better than it has been played before this season and gave promise of much Improvement last years work The work of Princeton. while encouraging. still showed marked weakness. and the interference afforded the runner and the tacking were still Door Sewanee played a fast and pIucky game but it matter of being hopelessIy outweighed and II could not stop the PUSHES of the heavy Tiger backs.

SEWANEE BEATEN BY PRINCETON Princeton, N. J., October 16.-(Special.) y Princeton defeated sewanee in the first inter-sectional game of the season by score of 20 to today. Three touchdowns and a safety made up the score. The game was more fiercely contested than the score would indicate. Time after time Myers of Sewanee brought the ball back into Princetons territory by long run, after the Tigers had rushed their opponents back for an apparently sure touchdown. sewanee was greatly out weighed in the line and back field, but played a fast open game and fought every inch of the way. Their swift end play completely broke Up Princeton’s interference on end runs and despite the fact that two touchdowns were scored In this way. usually threw the Tiger run ner for loss. In line plays the lighter Sewanee linesmen were powerless before the heavy opponents and only held for downs once during the game. Princeton’s first touchdown came after 10 minutes of play. The Tigers had the wind at their backs and playing kick ing game, soon had the ball within striking distance of tho goal Read took the ball over A safety by Sewanee near the end of the half added two more points to the score. Sewanee came back In the second half, fighting fiercely but the superior strength of Princeton began to tell. Read got off around right end for a 65-yard sprint 70 rthe second touchdown. From this point the size of the score simply depended on the length of the half. Sc wanes’s exhausted team was unable to stop the rushes of Hart and Dawson and by consistent line-plunging the latter was presently sent over for the third touch down. Sewanee played hard up to the last moment, and in the last few seconds of play Myers, for the southerners, came back with the ball through almost the entire Princeton team for a O-yard gain. ha
