LUCK FAvORS K. U. Kansas Aggies Put Up Game Battle Against University. tumble Recovered Back of Goal Line Decided Result. JOHNSON WAS STAR. konnedy’s Quarterback Was the Best Ground Gamer. Bates Field Goal Was the Only Score by Aggiss. | | The slight victory of Kansas university over the Kansas State Agricultural college in their fercely fought gridiron contest Saturday at Manhattan virtual | iy settled the state championship upon K U. and shows also the most APP proved tactics of two of Kansas best coaches, Mike Ahern and Bert Ken nedy, assisted by Frank Mosse. That each team general uncovered his entire strategic slate during the contest is certain, still those different things concelVeo or as products of genius were rubbed off almost as soon as exposed they are beautiful exhibitions when an opponent is entirely outclassed but in this battle players dare not be graceful and the play resolved very soon into the old style of play in its utmost sim plicity-the team with the ball kept it on the ground When fighting against the wind. while the team with the wind at its back punted at every opportunity. The greatest lesson taught in all the play of the 35 minute grilling halves is that on-side kicks are being neglected to a decided loss by most of the teams of the state. The same old short quarterback kick booted a little high is bet ter than ever. 1t has the advantage over forward pass of being quicker, sent from a set position without tell tale formation, and carries no penalty for striking the ground. The play was successful Saturday, resulting in <: US only touchdown, the only one of the game. The play showed to be not dangerous to its user by falling into opponents hands and tried sparingly by both teams. When 25 yards from the college goal Johnson booted a high one which the wind carried out of Bates reach and as he turned to get it bounding toward his goal line a fierce rush of players of both teams fought for the ball and piled UP behind the goal line. When the writing mass was untangled by the referee johnson was found curled around the ball-and K. L. had won. johnson the IA. U. Star. For Kansas University there was one star, Quarterback Tom Johnson The rest of the team was little in evidence though they were lighting the fight of the season to stop the fierce onslaught of the Farmers and remain on the field. Johnson’S punting was better than that of his opponent for the most part, whils he repeatedly made long gains from position and sensational returns of punts. His return of punts averaged 20 yards as against less than ten by his opponent AS a whole the university team SEEM ed stale. Bond, in some games aSstar. was not going we’ll and was relieved by Anmons. Pleasant played a steady fullback seemed in good form though replaced by Dahlene. But the team W ork of Kansas was much better than that of the Aggies. A gaining play was son, protected by the halves and ends which was better developed end at tack than the state has had for years. On the other hand the K. S. A. c. more determined. Still the man with the ball was continually thrown ahead without assistance Gingery from left tackle starred. smashing through the after time. Ramning through the tackle and guard he would swerve in a semicircle back toward center, which K. u. was playing OPEN and seldom he failed and that at the opponents goal when the play was started before all the line was set with the result that the over-eagerness caused the loss of a touchdown. X u. had made their touchdown go III with the wind which blew in a west erly direction. Against that wind Bates at quarter had tried three times to get a drop kick over the bar, After the touchdown with the wind in his favor he Immediately tried again but failed. But the fifth attempt made two min utes before the end of the half passed squarely between the bars and the score was as it remained through the last half, 5 to 3. Loss of Bates Hurt Again. Changing ends of the field at the second half, Mar haitian again had the wind. Bctes, however, was renewed from the game for rough playing. which nearly put Johnson out on account OF injuries, and Hunter was shifted from fullback which place was filled by Parks. The strategic game of the last half was to keep X. q. in their own territory and get another field goal or a touchdown near the end of the half and although K. L. was held in her own territory throughout the entire half the purpose failed. Too much eagerness failure for touchdown. Hunter tried three times for a drop kick goal and Parks tried oae all without success. 1t is quite probable that Bates, kicking With the wind in his favor, would have scored the necessary goal to win the game had he remained in. But a few years ago the score would have been a tie as it was, but The field goal had won too many games with too much ease and it was cut in value to four points and now this year to three and a player of a few years since can no longer recognize his old love in the scores of today. Five to three to him looks like the outcome of one of those in ferior games called baseball. The bitterness of the game led to pealties. Sixty-five yards were record ed against the Aggies including half the distance to the goal line at the re- o. 80
