YESTERDAYS FOOTBALL. Yale Plays Listless Football Against Holy Cross, but Gets a lZ-G Victory. NEW HAVEN, Conn, Oct. lin one of the most disappointing football games ever seen at Yale Field. Yale defeated Holy Cross II to 0. The warm weather made the players listless, especiaIly the Yale men. The pleasant feature of the day was when Fred Murphy went in as halfback in the second half and tore off a few gains, 1t was his first appearance at half this year, and ne was given a great ovation by the as sembled student body. The backfield was made up of Messenger. Field and Philbjn, and they took turns in plough ing up the Holy Cross line untAl they got within five yards of the goal. There Messenger dropped the ball, and Holy Cross took it. postponing n touchdown. Seized punted in the centre Of the field, there was an exchange of punts and Yale went on the offensive again. Messenger retrieved himself with a ten yard gain through centre. Field went another ten yards. n then the ball was given TO Philbin. He went around the end for thirty-five yards, making tho first touchdown of the game. Hobbs Immediately kicked the goal, and the game went on. Howe tried to drive the team, but it wouldn’t be driven. Finally the Ellis forced the ball down TO the ten yard line of Holy. Cross. but the team was held for downs. The Holy Cross backs were unable to gain, so Seized resorted to punting. He was unprotected and a quick jump by Hobbs blocked the punt. Hobbs then too the ball over for the second touchdown and kicked the goal. This wcs the end OF the scoring. Jones made a good run for 80 yards for Holy Cross, but the visitors never had a chance 70 score. ON the defense. however, the Holy Cross eleven played in great style, and Yale resorted to open play instead Of line plunging.
