GOPHERS TRAMP OVER IOWA Coach Williams Men Able to Toy with the Hawkeye Squad, SCORE FoRTY-oNE TO NOTHING Johnson, the Minnesota Ha1fback, and McGOvern, Quarter, Make Big Gains Apparently As Will. MINNEAPOLIS, Mimi, Oct. ~2.-(Special Telegram.)-Overwhelme by the surprising speed and superior Interference OF the Minnesota back field, Iowa was easily defeated here this afternoon on Northrup field by a score of Il to O. At the end of the first half Minnesota, through the splendid lodging runs of Johnson and McGovern, had scored four ~touchdowns. Johnson’s play was Irresistible. Time and again the half back, distinguished by his black hair, lodged and writhed through the Iowa team for long gains. Not only on end run did the speedy half make touchdowns possible. but in returning punts he twice ran half the length of the field for scores. Aside from the phenomenal play of the Gopher left half little Cap tain McGovern shone at quarterback. He ran the team we’ll and also made sub stantial gains. AS he was being tackled after a thirty-yard gain from u double pass he tossed the ball forward TO Rademacher who crossed the line for a touch down. Mlnnesota’s play was a distinct surprise for the Hawkeyes. They had expected no such mid-season form. The Gopher line charged fast and not once did 1t waver in the victorious play. One time in the second half Hazard broke through and blocked a punt. Stevens and Pickering ran excellent interference and made possible the wizard-like performance of the nimble Johnson. But Johnson was apparently un- ~stoppable after the interference was smashed and he lodged and warded off tacklers with marvellous ease, Four Minutes TO Touchdown. Farnham kicked off at S.T, but Hyland was soon forced to punt. Then the first inkling of the fast assault OF the Mime sofa back field became apparent. Johnson gained four yards by lodging Kresensky, The Iowa line held and johnson was called on to make first down. Four minutes later he carried the ball over the line and Far ham kicked goal. The rest of the game was the same story with Johnson, the dependable, assisted by the clever little general, McGovern, as the main cogs in DR.. Williams powerful scoring machine Stewart of Iowa called for a forward pass in one Of the short rallies made by the Iowa team toward the close OF the game. He threw the ball to Hyland. Rosenwald, who had been put In for the tired Johnson. caught the ball and raced for a touchdown. Stewart, e~ndeavoring 20 stop him, dove, The Gopher’s knee hit the Iowa quarters head. He came to and while staggering Tough off Trainer O’Brien and insisted on staying in the game. After the next kick off he was led crying from the field and Iowa, already crippled. was compelled TO make many shifts to present a lineup OF eleven men. Hyland starred for Iowa with Captain Gross a close second. Stewart and Ehret played ~pluckily. However, despite the efforts OF these men the Minnesota backs lodged through for long gains. Open Plays Successful. Minnesota tried forward passes six times and twice the open formations netted good points. However. end runs were the favorite Gopher ground gamers. with a double pass occasionally. Line plays were distinctly in the minority. Iowa gained as much ground through the center as did the Gophers and no consistent gains were made over the guards and tackles. Muir ply successfully made a thirty-yard run for Iowa just before the final whistle blew. Young. the Gopher tackle, was not in the game, owing to a condition In his studies. Schsin, center and Schroeder sub stitute fullback. were not used either Penalties were few and the officiating was exceptionally satisfactory. Minnesota was penalized for holding once and also foloffside play, while Iowa players interfered with a fair catch and the Hawkeyes lost five yards for being off side. The Iowa squad marched onto Mime sofa field confident of close score and possible victory, but was simply. swamped by the clever work and heavy rushes of the opposing team. The resuit marks the team of DR.. Williams as one of the best in the west and a worthy contender for western honors. Chicago upset the dope slightly by piling UP SO points on the Perdue eleven. A victory was looked for and the teams strength was to be meas ured by the size of the score. Chicago enthusiasts are we’ll pleased with the Maroons. The best game played in Iowa was the battle between Coe and Ames which was won by. the latter by the score of II to 5. Ames displayed superiority, but won only after hard j fight.
