Elements Of Similarity in De feat OF State University and Agricultural College THREE CONTESTS OF INTEREST. Wisconsin Iowa Game Leaves Latter in Good Shape for Contest With University of Illinois, Saturday GrinneIl Wins Annual Game From Draks--strensth in Assies’ Team. specia, to Tlmes- Republican. Iowa CITY. Nov. 4.-The two leading teams in the state played I’m hard luck Saturday. The university lost to Wis consin q to s. and the agricultural college lost to Nebraska 10 to .. Ihere were elements Of similarity In both games. In both, the winning team captured the game with but re” minutes left to play; in both, the losing team had MI the better of the ar gument during the larger part OF the contest Grinnell won It’s annual game from Drake by the score OF ~ 10 “ making the third consecutive victory scored over the Des Molnes institution with much lighter and weaker teams. These three contests We’re the only ones Of interest to the followers OF tne game inside or outside of the state, and they will have an important BEAR ing not only on the games 10 come but on the race for the Iowa chainpionship which Is now rapidly draw ing to Il close. The showing made by the state uni yersity against Wisconsin Is far more credttablo than appears at nrst sish’‘ since the Badgers showed marvellous Improvement over the form displayed by them In the Illinois game. Wisconsin practically forsook the old style game in the Hawkeye contest, and depended for it’s longest gains on the forward pass and the auarterback kick. the latter working to the best advantage. Catlins men also torsook the old style game. worked forward passes TO advantage. and mixed up the attack in a way that showed that Coach Catlin is building up a strong scoring machine. A strong wind IN terfered with the play of both teams. but the fumbling cannot all be excused on that account. The rar G leaves Iowa In good shape for the coming contest with the uu’versity Of Illinois, which Will De playel here next Saturday. Despite their defeat the Hawkeyes’ have gained confidence in the Wisconsin game. the defeats of the eleven have been shown up by the Badgers ana Catlin will have ample opportunity 70 correct them during the next five days. There is little doubt but that Iowa will go into the game with ILLINOIS in stronger condition than 1t entered the Wisconsin contest. but followers OF the team here are unwilling to hazard any prediction Of the outcome yet. on the showing, OF course, the dope nj, @s., t<,t IN ho a comfortable margin. The Ames- Nebraska game proved conclusively that Coach Williams is developing a great scoring machine at the state agricultural college. Ne braska had Ames outclassed on straight foot ball, but In the second half, when williams sent his men into the contest with orders to play every thing they knew, the Aggies developed a series Of trick plays and forward passes that swept the Cornhuskers off their feet. On the showing Of the two teams against Minnesota, Nebraska had all Of the advantage Of the argument, but Williams has evidently sue ceeded in pulling his men ahead faster than the Nebraska coaches. The game u.s. Of course, of great significance in the race for the Iowa championship 1t proves conclusively that the Aggies who hold the state title at the present time, will offer Iowa a magnificent battle on November 23rd, when the two teams meet at Ames. Both teams are evenly matched In weight and both coaches have succeed ed in teaching them the new forma tons made possible by the forward
