Past Week Has Given Opportunity to Measure Capabilities of Foot Ball Squads TWO BIG GAMES THIS WEEK GrnnelI to Meet Nebraska and Ames viii Take on Minnesota Grinnel’ Will Meet Defeat-Drake and NOR ninaside of Equal Strength – Foot Ball Notes. 20 T,mes-Republican. Sptcial to Times RephpllcaH. Iowa City. Oct THE coming week will be an interesting one to IOWA sportsmcn. on account OF the 1ac’ ‘ha’ two of the state college teams VIII meet foreign squads in foot ball contoste ,;rinnell college will meet Ne braska university at llhcoin aho Arnes VIII meet Minnesota at M’nneapoils other games of interest 10 pc pl;,yed next Saturday are the Drake Simpson practice game at lndlahoia’ Carmel, vs. Des Moines college at MI Vernon and S. U. I.-Alumni game at Iowa CITY All of these contests Win the exception of the last, VIII nav some bearing on the Iowa chat’ipiohshin. In several instances they VIII afford the first real test OF the teams, and this fact makes the contests doubly important. The Drake Morningside game OF last Saturday was by long odds the feature of the weeks work in Iowa foot pan. The final score of 6 to 5. close as IL is does not show the nerve racklng nature of the contest. Drake won by a safety and field goal. while Nor n.ngside scored its five points on long run, half the length of the field, the ball being recovered on tumble. Neither OF the teams were able 10 advance the ball by straight foot ball, both resortng to punting to keep their goal out of danger. While Drake won, the two teams can be fairly considcred on a par at the present time, the break in the luck helping the Des Moines institution. An interesting comparison of the Drake and Morningside teams this year with the teams representing the same institutions on Bass field last year. shows that Morningside had six veterans of the 1905 lineup in the eleven- this fall while Drake had only five men left out of the 1906 team. The new men who are finding a place on the two teams are as follows: Morn ingside, Weatherbee, l.. G.; Bridenbaugl. +. G.; Westcott, R. E.. Ever, Fl. H: Robbins, F. B.; Drake, Warren, c.. Purdy r. G.; Scharnberg, r. T.; Wilson, L. H.; Moss, r. H.; and Woodrow, F. b. Woodrow played with Drake last year, but not against Nor rlingside. The Coe College-Ames game, played Friday, in which the agriculturalists defeated Coach Bryants men by the score of Is to 0, has little bearing on the situation in the state at this time. .Ames outWeighed the Coe team thirty pounds to the man, and the Aggies loafed thru the game. The only time Williams really wanted to make a gain, McElhenney walked thru the Coe team for twenty-five yards without great difficulty. Hubbard ran the team for Ames the first half, and Jeanson the second half. On the comparison Hub bard had all of the advantage of the showing and there now seems to be some likelihood, of the Ida Grove man beating out the ex-captain for his old position. Coach Bryant has succeeded in putting the fighting spirit in the Coe team and a sensational game can be expected in the Coe and Drake meet on October 10th. Grinnell has little hope of defeating Nebraska, of course, and 1t is expected that Minnesota will not have very hard time in downing Ames. The makeup of the Cornell and Des Moines college teams is entirely prob lematical and it is therefore impossible to estimate the outcome. BY the end of the present week the situation will have cleared up in Iowa. so that clear prospective can be obtained of the coming struggle for Hawkeye SUI premacy
