They were defeated by A1nes October 20 as the penalty Of slow work. Today they won laurels from the big Gopher team by their lightning-lil<e work. BY using their speed TO the best advantage and throwing I’m a ! few fake plays the Cornhuskers had the pbali In Minnesotas territory within ten minutes after play began. They we’re not only In dangerous ground but were within few yards OF the goal posts. This squirt on the part of the visitors simply put a kink in all hopes of the Minnesota sup porters for big score. They not only played fast, but put up a defense that held the heavyweights of the Minnesota line. For a comparatively light team. that is from a Minnesota standpoint. Nebraska was the fastest eleven that has ever put in an appearance on Northrop field. NebrRska’s whirIvind start. A smash at center failed to gain and Ne braska was penalized fifteen yards, send ing the ball back to Minnesota’s twenty eight-yard line. Schmidt dropped back to Minnesotas thirty eight-yard line but II was fake and Little lost four yards. Min nesota got the ball on its own forty-eightyard line Schuckneck went through right tackle for three and four yards and Ittner made two. Ittner again went through for five and Schuckneck failed at right tackle Nebraska held on its own forty yard Inc. SO It was all the way through the first half First one team would work to their opponents goal and seemed sure of touchdown, when by a trick play or punt the ball would be eorced back to the center of the field. After exchanging punts, Cooke got the ball on a delayed pass on Nebrsska’s twenty-two-yard line and ran down the field for eighty yards. going around the left end. This was the best run Of the game and was stopped within five yards of the goal line by wonderful tackle on the part of Schuckneck. Relief for the Rioters. Much relief was felt in the stands when the first half was over, for 1t was felt by the Minnesota followers that Coach Foster’s men might carry the ball over the line on end runs. The first half ended with the ball in Nebraska’s territory and the rooters calling for a touchdown. The Gophers went after their little OPP pOnents for all they were worth right from the start i’m the second half and by power full line PUSHES put the sphere In the Wis itors’ territory. The first touchdown Of the game came when Larkin punted from Min nesota’s fifty-yard line to Nebraska’s five yard line. There the Cornhuskers were held for downs and punted to Minnesota’s fifty-yard line. Then the powerful williams machine started down the field with the speed OF an engine. gaining five and ten yards at each jump They trampled over their opponents and pushed the ball over for score 1t was a great moment to the 5000 enthusiast who were present The work Of the Minnesota line showed COM plete reversal and their speed was wonder full. The other goals were made by Bobby Marshall, and were from the thirty-yard line, he kicking the ball over the goal on two occasions. Try as they would Ne braska could not get within striking dis lance of the Gopher goal during the sec ond half, though they put up the same plucky game. Coach Foster put I’m several substitutes TO turn the tide, but with, ut avail. The stars Of the game were the two colored boys, Marshall and johnson. that is from defensive standpoint. Cookies two long runs were the best OF the kind Referee Hackett was forced to penalize both teams several times during the game, both sides being guilty of bad plays. MinneSOta’s Great Team.
