MINNESOTA RODlPS OFF WITH NEBRASKA GAME GOPf4ERS PILE UP SIX TOUCfADOWNS HANDIY y MICHIGAN TAKES WISCONSIN SCALP Wolverines Win Sensational Bat tie by Two Touchdowns Badgers Great Fight. Special to The Journal. Ann Arbor, Mich, Nov. lS.-Michigan triumphed over Wisconsin today in a contest featured by accidents, and will go into the finals for the western championship of the gridiron with an unbroken record Of victories and a goal line uncrossed. The score was II to 0 in Michigan s favor, half of the wolverine count being due to something of a fluke-a fumbic on a punt. A spectacular incident of the second half was the collapse of a temporary bleacher at the west end of the grounds, This structure, filed with 5000 persons. slowly disintegrated, settling down finally with roar that could be heard for miles Almost miracuiously, how ever, it’s occupants escaped injury OF a serious nature The collapse of the structure was so gradual that nearly all the spectators had ample OppOrtunIty to descend from the higher points. No Serious Injuries. One man. Vernhir of Milwaukee, was struck by q board and rendered unconscious for an hour. He recovered com pletelv, however. A young man named Bell OF Bay City sustained a fractured | kneecap, and there were scores OF | bruises and cuts. Places were found ! on the side lines for the former occupants of the blcacher, and the game, which had been stopped for fifteen minutes, was resumed. Fully twenty thousand persons wit messed the game, excursions being run | from all points of Importance in the lower peninsula as well as from Madison and Chicago. A remarka bic fact in connection with the COLLAPSE of the bleacher was that three minutes before it took place signs of weakness showed themselves / and the occupants were warned to come down. No attention was paid to the warning, however. Michigan was near. ING the Wisconsin goal at the call OF time. The battle of badger and wolverine was a great one to watch, because OF the ferceness and evenness of attack and defense, and the gallant fighting spirit displayed. Both teams showed glaring faults at times, and the chief of these were fum- bling, off-side play and holding. Melzner’s Costly Fumble. So well matched were the rivals in the first half that neither could have scored but for Melzner’s tumble after :, catching a place kick early in the half. It occurred right in the shadow of his own goalposts and gave Michigan the ball only four yards from the last line : Norcross Immediately threw all OF Michigan’s powerful weight and at tack against the badger line, and three of these telling blows, the final one :, , aimed at center, put the ball over the !, line for touchdown This break occurred on the first OF , Tom Hammond s four attempts III that : half to kick field goal from placement and was the only one that did not &C = wide of the posts. 1t was made from the 45-yard line and fell short. altht . the aim was true. The remainder OF = the first half was unproductlve OF } scores. ! Michigan kept possession of the bal ! most of the time and drove Wisconsin : hack with the ferocity of its attack + but always the badgers would brace ‘ in time to avert danger, or Michigan would tumble. Failures at Field Goals. / Three more times Tom Hammond wa! . given chance to kick field goal, tW’ a from near the 4O-yard line and on’ ;, from the 3O-yard mark. = = None of them was close, but one o: g them resulted in tangle and dlsput . over the rules. Tom s kick was low - = and the ball hit Michigan lineman :: veering off to the left. Melzner lie a it alone. but Longman pickle! up tn n leather and scooted over the line for t touchdown. But this was not allowed & Of course. , There was long discussion owe It whether Wisconsin should be give. tn E ball where the off-side play was com r mitted OF be given free kickout fron n the 25-yard line. Referee Hacket r. finally ruled it & free kick for tn is badgers. d Toward the end of the half Wiscon Continued on Sd Page, 4th Column, Sport Section.

Nov 1s.-Michigan’s ioot pail eleven defeated Wisconsin on one touchdown in each half The fiIst touchdown was almost a replica of the play which gave Minnesota its first toucnooWn against Wisconsin at Minneapolis TWO weeks ago, Melsener fumbllng a punt and Michigan getting the bail on WIscon- SIN 81 tonr-yard line. In point of desperate defense and equally desperate and more successful attack the series OF plays which resulted in Michigan second touchdown has not been seen on teFry Field IN many years. Michigan previously had found Wisconsin’s ends Too strong and Barlow, who succeeded Captain N1ECIOss at Quarterback in the second hair, called upon Curtis, LOngman. MICHIGAN WINS FROM WISCONSIN Western Championship Between Chicago and Michigan BLeACHERS IN C0LLAPS Stamping In Unison of 2ooo People Causes Throng to Be Preclpl- tsted to the Ground Ann Arbor, Mich, November 1s-Mlcn- gan’s football eleven defeated Wisconsin on Ferry field this afternoon, l2 to o.s scoring one touchdown in each half. The first touchdown was almost a replica or the play which gave Minnesota her nrsl touchdown against Wisconsin at Minne- apolis two weeks ago. Milzner’ fumpieo a punt and Michigan getting the pail It took the third down to get the necessary four yards. The touchdown In the secono half of the game followed march down the field for 80 yards. In point of desperate defense and desper- ate and more successful attack the series of nlavs which resulted in Michigan’s seoond touchdown has not been seen on Ferry field before. Michigan had previous found wisconsin’s ends too strong ana arlo. who succeeded Captain Norcross quarter back in the second half, called pon Curtis, Longrnan. Tom Hammond nd Weeks for series of straight bucks nd attacks on Wisconsin’s tackles, which Wisconsin was utterly unable to stop. dost of these plays were directed against Nisconsins right side and Deering, who ustained the brunt of them, fairly reeied rom exhaustion by the time Wisconsin fifteen yard line had been reached. Hope .essly defeated. Wisconsin fought hard and only the magnificent tackling or Barlow sayed Michigans goal line from being crossed on three different occasions following the final touchdown by Michi- gan. Today’s victory brings this years strug- gle for the western championship down to Michigan and Chicago. The game in Chi, cago on Thanksgiving day, therefore, VIII settle which team shall hold the honor. Bleachers Collapse. Ann Arbor, Mich, November 1S.- Weakened by the cheering and stamping fin unison of 2oO0 people. the west bleacher on Ferry field collapsed this afternoon ar- ter the second half of the football game between Michigan and Wisconsin had be- gun. Almost miraculously none or the throng who were precipitated to the ground was seriously injured. The bleach CTS had no seats, being merely series of terraced platforms running up to height of about 12 feet on which the peo- ple stood. This fact Is believed to be responsible for the lack of serious in- 5uries, as If the 20o0 people had been sit- ting many limbs would have been broken Less than a dozen of the occupants of the crowded stand were hurt enough to have n physician attend them. The most serl- ously injured are: verna Huir, Milwau- kee; F. w. Scott, Ypsilanti, Mich; Joseph Ross. Ann Arbor; John B. Strayer, Pitts burg Twenty minutes before the stand crash cd the officials discovered that 1t was weakening and tried to have 1t vacated The first crash of breaking boards at- tracted the attention of both football teams and the thousands of others in the stand, and before the last section had entirely collapsed, the game had been stopped and both teams were running to tear down tho fences.
