SPORTS OF ALL SORTS Surprises in Saturdays Big Foot Ball Battles. SOLDIERS BEAT YALE GEORGETOWN AND GEORGE WASHINGTON TEAMS vICToRs. DR.. Gray Won Chief Cup of Chevy Chase Golf Tourney-Intercollegi Golf-Lou Dillon’s Fast Trot. And still the foot ball upsets come. Yale visited West Point Saturday and drank the bitter draught of defeat. Columbia met with a similar experience at Pennsylvania hands. Harvard disposed of the Indians handily and now looms up ahead of the eastern pigskin brigade. Princeton gave Lehigh a sound drubbing. the navy could only break even with Dickinson, Dart mouth was scored on by Holy Cross. as was Cornell by Franklin and Marshall; Lafaycite took Swarthmore into camp and Am herst beat Brown. and, like Harvard still has clean slate. Here’s an unusual state of affairs. The foot ball championship of 1904, of the east, so far the snar of confusing results will permit of satisfactory deductions, may hang in the balance when the army and navy meet in Philadelphia on November %. West Point has trimmed Yale and Annapolis has fayed the Princeton Tiger: SO if Yale should beat Harvard, the only team which has beaten West Point, the soldiers and mddies may toe the scratch with rec ords that enttle them to championship claims. What will happen to them in the meantime may make difference. West Point has Princeton to meet. but even should the former lose to the JerSeymen victory over Annapolis would offset this, for has not Annapolis whipped Princeton? the West Point game undefeated- That will be about enough bridges to cross for the present in figuring on the West Pont-Annapolis encounter as champion ship one. Form in foot ball is supposed to be the most trustworthy of any sport involving team competition, yet form received black eye at West Point last Saturday. There are two kinds of form. There is the form of scores and the actual playing form. The former considered. Harvard by beating West Point to D. excels Yale, which was beaten by West Point, II to 6. But in the actual playing form exhibited by the Grim son and the Blue. respectively, against the cadets Yale has the call The game played by Yale at the Point was stronger than Harvard’s game there. There was more to it, a better offense and a better defense. Harvards game was the more successful because free from the manual shortcomings which cost Yale the game. Harvards game was surer, but nothing like as powerful. Results of Saturdays Games. Harvard. Il; Indians. o. West Point, IL; Yale. g. Princeton, 60; Lehigh, 0. Pennsylvania. IS: Columbia, o.
