GAVE THEM A SURPRISE Kansas Football Players Hold Colo RADIO to q Tie. Lawrence, Oct. 17.-In a plucky and hard-fought contest on McCook field the Kansas state university team played the strong Colorado state uni versity team to a tie on Saturday. The final score was 6 to 6, both teams scoring a touchdown in the first half. There is every reason to believe that the Colorado men expected walk away. After they had defeated Ne braska they supposed that the. Kan sas players would be easy victims. The Kansas team went into the contest badly crippled. Captain HICKS juries; Chappell, the fast halfback, has been retired; Michaelson was out of condition, but played the game out with bulldog grit, and several others were more or less. used up. The fact that in spite of all this the Kansans held their opponents to a tie, means much in their favor. 1t is true that luck was with them and they were handling of punts by the Colorado men and by costly fumbles, but in the closing few minutes of the play the Kansans simply carried the westerners off their feet, and had the play continued five minutes longer they would undoubtedly have secured another score. AS it was, Russell missed field goal by a narrow margin with only three minutes to play. Galley for Colorado also missed several easy at tempts at field goals. The noun taineers excelled in team work and repeatedly battered the strong Kansas line for good gains. The fierce playing and tackling of Pooler, the quarterback and acting captain of the Kansas team, was one of the features of the game, and Nc Carty’s work at fullback was also brilliant. Nicholson, handicapped by in juries as he was put up a brilliant article of football. The Colorado players complained about the work of Harry Scandrett, of Topeka, who acted as referee, but there never was a fairer official on football field. The score by the Kan sans was made on a quarterback kick by Pooler which went over Colorado’s goal line, and Mccoy fell on the ball. 1t is true that the Colorado fullback made no attempt to get the ball, on the theory that it was Colorado’s ball, but Mr.. Scandrett allowed the score, which was unquestionably right. Colorado at first refused to play the second half unless Scandrett was dis placed, but they finally gave in and played out the game, though there was more or less wrangling. Colorado was penalized Is yards for holding by Umpire Coleman when within 20 yards of the Kansas goal in the sec ond-shalf. Fleishman, of the Kansas smuggling. B The game opened with Kansas kick ing off. Pooler sent the pigSkin down the field for twenty-five yards. 1t was returned fifteen. Here followed some hard scrimmaging and Kansas soon got the ball, but was forced to punt. PoOleF sent the sphere twenty-five yards and it rolled to the visitors s. yard line. Colorado soon punted out of danger. Kansas fumbled Immediately and Colorado continued to advance the ball. Freshman got the ball on a tumble and Pooler punted again. There was much punting at this point and the ball was kept in the Colorado territory. yard line, but failed The ball was punted out and after a few downs Col orado gained possession on Kansas 20 yard line. Galley went around the end for fifteen yards and was soon pushed over for the first touchdown. He kick ed goal Green was put in place of Meyers line rushes with. five minutes left to play. Pooler made a quarter back kick from Colorado’s 10-yard line and Nc Coy got the ball back to Colorado’s goal The first half closed with the ball in Kansas possession on Colorado’s rs yard line. Score, to s. The visitors kicked off in the second half and Kansas carried the ball to the center of the field. where the Jayhawkers were held for downs Colorado pushed to the Kansas 20-yard line and lost the ball There was some hard scrinrna cling here and the ball was car ried back and forth in ten yards of ter ritory. Galley attempted a field goal from the 25-yard line, but missed it. Ackarrnan was here knocked out and Davis nut in at tackle. Ise was also put in at left half in place of Green, who was suffering from injuries received two weeks ago. Maun was put in place of Cavanaugh in the Colorado line 1t looked several times as if Col orado would get another score, but the Kansans held them and pushed the ball to the visitors 40-yard line. Russell was put in place of McCarty at full and attempted a field goal, but failed. The ball came down about two feet from the post Immediately in the center, and had there been a little more steam a goal would have been scored. The lineup:
